An idiot savant?
Autism, perhaps?
Rain Man, starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, is a film about both conditions -- autism and Savant Syndrome. Not all autistic persons are savants, in fact only one in 10 autistic persons have any savant abilities, let alone the prodigious skills of Raymond Babbitt, the man who Hoffman portrayed in the film.

with me so much because when I taught high-school English
(29 years) I had several students, usually boys, who made
average or below-average grades and didn't seem to aspire to
be thought smart. Then I saw their state test scores, which were
impressive, especially the scores on inferential skills!

Thank you! I appreciate your comments and feedback. It happens with girls too... Although, they usually go backward and will intentionally score lower to not be found at all. It is amazing at what lengths folks will go to - to simply fit in.
