This is a very powerful story for anyone who knows someone either disabled, a veteran who has lost something or someone, or just anyone who can relate to wanting to leave reality for the the best alternative.

Sorry no sixer for this outstanding short piece! Sugar sweet and I think my favorite so far, Yvette! This had a lot of emotional depth and longing. More often than not, a memory of a loved one can be an angel of sustaining grace.
All my best,
Sal

So good of you to stop by for the read and review, Sal -- always appreciate the time it takes on the stories...thank you for that!! :) And I am so very glad you enjoyed my Colin and his angelic Miriam -- they both stole a piece of my heart when I put them to paper! :) ;) Thank you for your wonderful confirmation that I did them 'right'! ;) ;) Take care and have a wonderful week filled with beach dreams of your own (maybe we can usher in Spring a bit earlier since Winter sure hurried itself in here, right?)!! ;) ;) Yvette :)

I liked this piece. it's very whimsical and has a very lyrical sort of quality to it, especially come that ending.
nice job

"I'm sure, ma'am," Colin kept smiling. - it may be better hereto end the dialogue with a period / full stop.

Great entry for the contest! It's not easy to make such an impression with this word limit.
I liked the two worlds he lives in, one where he deals with an ignorant buyer, and the other where he escapes with his sweet Miriam.

I am so very pleased that you enjoyed this, ioana!! :) ;) As with almost all of my 'writes', both Colin and his Miriam stole a piece of my heart when I put them to paper! :) ;) Thank you for your wonderful confirmation that I did them 'right'! ;) ;) Don't be a stranger and drop by any time -- have a wonderful weekend filled with beach dreams of your own!! ;) ;) Yvette :)

This was fantastic Yvette. It was inspirational and showed Colin's belief in not only angels but his bond with Miriam. It was enjoyable to read. I tend to believe that one has to believe what they write and angels are wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Yvette, this is a great flash. I liked it a lot. It was hard to say when reality stopped and fantasy began but that made it even more mysterious. I also liked how you showed the prejudice against people who don't conform to the norm. Good luck. All the best. Ulla:)))

A very well-written story. It is indeed the case about everywhere that people in wheelchairs are judged as incapable of doing anything for theimselves. Most people are amazed about all the things we are capable of.

This is heartwarming. You give us just enough description and plausible dialog to tell the story completely without exceeding the required word count, while making the reader feel present as though invisibly standing there the whole time. Superb, and aptly illustrated

You are most welcome, Yvette. It was a delight to read a tale of a severely wounded veteran who not only found success through his artwork but also found love to replace otherwise lonely nights possibly filled with war nightmares. Even if it is just a recurring dream, it is better than the alternative. I like both your imagination and your error-free prose (the latter being harder and harder to find these days). I appreciate your well wishes too. :)) -- Mike

Thank you, Mike -- and, yes, I tend to be more on the OCD side so, the 'error-free' is all me :) ;) ;) I really get 'crazy' and make a made rush back to the computer if a reviewer points out grammar issues! :) :) LOL! Take care! :) Yvette

Yes, so do I, on the rare occasions when I've missed a typo. It is simply true that anyone can overlook a typing error. That's one of the reasons I like FanStory, as other eyes will catch what I miss in my own work (no matter how many times I reread it). -- Mike

Well done, Yvette. It was such a pleasant, easy read. Not one single word jarred the smooth flow of this piece.
It was hard to tell where the reality ends and the fantasy begins. The painting was of a girl who rescued him? Maybe she died? Maybe she was an angel all along. So many possibilities. It's mysterious.
Glad you got in some social commentary about public attitudes toward handicapped.
Good luck in the contest. This is a good entry.

So glad you enjoyed, ma'am -- it was one of those that developed as I typed!! ;) But once the idea took hold, I fell in love with Colin! :) ;) Because the blonde is cra-a-a-azy! :) Thanx for the review, MQ -- have a great rest of the weekend! :) Yvette

Wow! I wish I had one more sixer so that I could give it to you. You certainly deserve six stars. I love this mix of fictionalized reality with the narrator in a wheelchair, and his fantasy every night of standing in the sand at sunset, holding his angel's body close to his, and wishing every night that he would not go back to his reality. The whole story is told very well. It is touching and heartfelt and topical, all at the same time. I love the sarcasm he displayed at the lady at his art show. I love the ending, which is my favorite part. The last three lines say so much about your sensitive and caring heart. The fact that you wrote so well, in exactly 500 words, is amazing! Thank you for touching my heart with this lovely story.
Take care, Jesse

Oh, Jesse - just your words are enough to make me smile, sir!!! :) ;) As with almost all of my 'writes', both Colin and his Miriam stole a piece of my heart when I put them to paper -- you made my weekend just knowing that they touched yours as well! :) ;) Thank you for your wonderful confirmation that I did them 'right'! ;) ;) Have a wonderful weekend filled with beach dreams of your own (even if it is up there in Michigan -- I mean, what are dreams for anyway, right?)!! ;) ;) Yvette :)

Hi Yvette
I'm smiling as I read your response to my review. I'm so glad I made your weekend. Beach dreams are sometimes on my mind, as I used to go down to the beach in Long Beach, California to watch the sunrise every morning. I went alone and communed with the seagulls, pigeons, and the waves washing in on the shore. My beautiful memories of that time in my life help me through an otherwise tough day. We must keep the fond memories, and dreams alive, to enjoy this life of ours. Enjoy your weekend, too!
Jesse
