The winner of the contest, yes, I would agree with that. The age of most soldiers is the worst of ages to die. You could never fight a war with old men...excellent post.

This is beautifully composed, Rod. Congratulations for your win in the contest. Please check out the author's note which may have an error here:
"GRIEVING WOMAN IN SMALL FRENCH WOMAN (Village?) 1917
I love art history and amazed that this painting has artist unknown.
Your poem is nicely constructed and tugs at the heart for this themed piece. Marilyn

Thank you so much for sharing ?Her Grief Is Mine, ? Marilyn. I am very pleased you like it so much. Yes, it appears I made a mistake in my notes. I should also look for that artist. Again, many thanks. Rod

Hi Rod. I did a search, but did not find that painting. It's such a good one, now I'm curious to find the artist.
-
Hi Marilyn. I did some research too. The artist is likely Luplau Janssen who is Danish.

Yes, that does appear to be the artist. A post war impressionist. Looked him up after you sent his name. Excellent work. Thanks for sharing.

This is a sad and meloncholy write and of course leaving for war during WW1 meant that you would never return and so the wives would grieve from the moment they left, a very sad and honest write, love Dolly x

The photo was lovely and set the stage. I knew what to expect before I read a single word.
I enjoyed your poem. It told your story clearly and flowed well.

Thank you, ChibElf, for sharing "Her Grief Is Mine" and your kind praise. This is an ekphrastic poem (i.e.-one inspired by an artwork). I am so pleased you think the story was told clearly.

I can understand the wife's grief. But, I think she is treating her daughter unkindly by not telling her how her daddy died. It should make them both proud that he died fighting in war.
I hope you did well in the contest.

Thank you so much, dragonpoet, for sharing "Her Grief Is Mine." I meant to imply that the mother knows nothing about how or where her husband died, only that he's dead now and buried. So often this was true in that war; unlike WWII officers did not come to the house personally to report such grievous news. I appreciate your best wishes.

You're welcome. Thanks for the clarification.

Dear Mystery Poet,
Unfortunately, this horror isn't relegated to the era of the 1800-1900s. We have men and women all over the world who have to deal with these terrible emotions on a daily basis. As long as war exists, those who stay at home will have to deal with the consequences. Thanks for reminding us to think of those who hurt. Good luck!

You are so right, robyn, about the horror not being relegated to the past; it;s ongoing. Many thanks for sharing my poem.

Hello!
Very moving and poignant.
How futile and senseless is war, and yet, mankind never, never learns... Each war has its own individual horrors. My grandfather fought in WWI. Mustard gas...words do not adequately describe its horrors...
Thank you for sharing!

A very well-written poem. It is hard to deal with grief especially when it is not our own making that cause the situation we grief about. We can only help others to get through the grieving process by showing compassion.
