Hi, Craig,

Well wasn't this a cheery little poem! I hate bats. It doesn't have anything to do with their relationship to vampires - it's just because they are so creepy. My father told me they were rats with wings.

But, you made good use of your new word,

~MP~

Awww, bats are our cousins in the mammal family, Patty. And they're so cute! You should be nice to them, never know when you'll wake up and find one staring down at you from the ceiling hehehe

The Stars of Halloween...

Hey, hanging bats are very real.
The 'sucking blood' thing lacks appeal,
but they're the cutest little creatures
All Saint's Eve so often features!

Better bats than ghouls and goblins,
and in summer we have problems --
other critters suck our blood.
Mosquitoes swarm in one large flood

and bats will feast upon those pests,
so I encourage bats to nest
inside my hidden rooftop rafters.
I can clean the guano after.

:)) (My apartment building really does house the little guys in the rafters) LOL.

And for years I've been hushing all those people who said you had bats in the belfry. Turns out it's 100% true! ;-)

Thanks so much, Dawn for the lovely poem :)

Hi Craig, I loved it. Yet another great poem using one of your strange words. I've loved to follow your journey through the magic book, and I'm looking forward to what is still to come. All the best. Ulla:))

Well once a person has started down the Halloween road it's most difficult to get off, yes? A fun poem reminiscent of EAP and aaaarg those bats. They are so cute, but skeery if you weren't expecting a night visitor.

Great job and a fun read today. :)

Gloria

Thanks very much, Gloria. They seem to have taken up residence in my belfrey :) Cheers, Craig

Lol! You managed to use that interesting word in a cute, humorous story poem. I like that picture, too. I don't mind bats but not in the house. Great job in alternating the same rhymes in 12 lines!

A very well-written Halloween poem. We have quite a few bats in our neighborhood, when it starts to get dark we see them flying all over the place to seek hunting ground for the night.

Thanks very much, Sandra. Much maligned creatures with an undeservedly nasty reputation, I think. Cheers, Craig

Yes indeed, I would have been long gone from there myself. LOL Your poem put me in mind of Edgar Allen Poe. The same rhythm I believe. His rendition of The Raven had the same flow. Well done Craig. Nancy:)

    Hi Nancy,

Yes. I didn't intentionally start out that way with this one, but it ended up being a bit Ravenesque in rhythm. Thanks so much :) Craig

LOL ... this is a fun read, Craig. He/she jumped out of bed on the off chance that this bat was indeed a vampire (better safe than sorry, right?). "But my senses made me leary" ... love the image that this puts into your reader's head.

This well-rhymed poem, with good humor, conveys the meaning of the word "laqueary" well. I've added the word to my ever-growing list of words to remember. Between you and lyenochka (Helen) I'm increasing my vocabulary at warp speed.

I once had a bat problem when I lived in the mountains of British Columbia. The bats would roost under the eaves of the south side of our log cabin. Each morning I'd find what looked like little mouse turds on the outside of my bedroom window. Grrr! We consulted an exterminator. He advised us to hang a fake owl on the south side of the cabin so that the bats wouldn't roost there. Apparently bats like to choose south-facing places to sleep as it is the warmest side of a structure.

Cheers,
Connie

I guess that means they would choose the north side where I am :)

It's funny, the trees in parks around here are full of the little critters at certain times of the year, but I've never heard of them setting up shop in someone's house. Seems to be a common thing with your bats, though. Most grateful, Craig

Great job on this one. Loved the rhyming, the theme, and the new word. When I lived in the mountains of California, most homes had bats. Mine lived in the eaves of the roof. Each evening they fly out and each dawn I'd see them flying home. Kept the bugs under control. Marilyn

People dislike bats, but they really do some good work unless they are pooping in your attic. They're capable of squeezing into very small spaces. In my case, they squished themselves between the boards of the overhang which was not inside the house at all. However, when I sold the house I had to call the exterminator as requested by the buyer. Exterminators like to wait until all the young are old enough to fly out on their own, then they fumigate, and cover the openings with screening so they cannot re-enter. I my case, it was winter when I sold the house so there were no babies to worry about. Marilyn

Splendid shades of Edgar Allan Poe in the rhythm and rhyming of your Hallowe'en swansong. Very much enjoyed. I get a bit sick of this Hallmark festival and all the nonsense that goes with it. It's refreshing to read something like this though, that tickles the funnybone.

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments, Tony. I guess we can pack up all the pumpkins and black cats for another year or so, and back to business as usual :) Cheers, Craig
