"He was a fickle son, just boarding bordering on being a disgrace to his father who worked so hard." ...I believe you meant "bordering" here, Anonymous Author.
I never knew that Louis Pastuer was an artist, much less a good one.
Of course, this IS a "what if" story so you could have made that up.
Regadless of that, this is fine entry.
Good luck in the contest.

Oh my, I will fix that in a moment, thanks for catching it. Thank you so much Dean for reading, reviewing, good luck wishes and your kind comments. Nope I did not make that one up, he was an artist and a good one.

I meant to review this earlier when it paid, but forgot. I found it well-written and very informative. Your detailed description of disease caused by contaminated soil made me thankful for Pasteur's curious nature.

This is a wonderful write. I enjoyed it all. Well done and informative. The what if's of a sick mind, the terrorists or others who may want to do something diabolical, are distinct possibilities in today's crazy world. Just look at how 'in your face' vicious people of opposing political views are. Frightening. Much luck in the contest.

A great entry for the "What if...?" contest as well as being very informative. Overall well-written and well edited as well though I did notice a missing word....

"I do believe the biggest scare would BE via the mail service,"

There are so many of these possible circumstances down through history, where if (XXXX name) didn't happen along with their special talents/intellect that so many things would or could've been very different, as you've discussed. However, I tend to believe that in MOST cases, the level of "learning" (in say the area of poisons or foodstuff safety in this case) was itself expanding to the point that where if "XXXX" didn't make the discovery or the change, person "YYYY" would have soon after.

I don't intend to enter this contest, however I believe that the single most "irreplaceable" such person in living memory was (don't laugh) former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. This man took a naturally suspicious and war-footing country, led by a Politburo that were intent on full-blown nuclear war "if required" and decided to ignore his own Party and Politburo and grab the chance at peace, even if it meant putting his nation's trust at the mercy of the western leadership.

Such a brave and pro-active decision was far more difficult than any decisions that his counterpart Ronald Reagan may have had with convincing his underlings, who by and large wanted peace anyway.

IF Gorbachev had not been the kind of man he was and just another in the long line of hard line Soviet leaders - Khrushchev, Andropov, Chernenko et. al., would the world have lasted through his reign and subsequent reigns without seeing a Third World War?

I doubt it.

Nice work. Sorry about the rant.

Oh, Bill, don't worry about going on regarding Gorbachev, I do happen to agree with you. Thank you so much for reading, reviewing, your kind comments and keen observations. I will make that correction shortly. You should enter the contest, you may surprise yourself. Again thanks.

I was drawn in by your title, "What if Cows Didn't?" Didn't what, I wondered! I half-expected an essay on the dire consequences of methane gas being expelled into the atmosphere. In the event, I found an interesting short biography of Louis Pasteur and his contribution to science, together with some dire scenarios foreshadowed, should terrorists resort to biological warfare.

Thank you so much for reading, reviewing and your kind comments. I was trying to keep the contest name in the title, thought of Pasteur's pasteurization and then though why not leave the sentence open ended, ta da a title. lol

This is a rather dark story but I can feel it's power. Your opening is a great hook into the story. What if's most certainly are an interesting thought to ponder. Too many of us spend more time reviewing this than we probably should. The truth is, what is is already done and changing the past is impossible but changing the future is necessary. Thank you for sharing!

Although this is a serious topic, I enjoyed the poem because it made me think. You made me think what if a baby drank the milk of a cow, that had eaten grass, from a field, whose soil held Bubonoc Plague. The chain of hosts that leads to disease boggles my mind.
When you transferred over to talk about anthrax, I took it seriously because this is a very real threat. Because you had already talked about the disease process with the plague, I was already thinking with a process might be for anthrax. I think you followed the what-if assignment very well because you definitely made me think what if about certain scenarios. This was very intelligent and informative, so I think you! Great writing!
