Oh boy, I guess he quickly decided it would be better to rappel away rather than face the ridicule of being called a coward. I hope the rappelling went well for him!

Nice comeback! I agree! This ain't no "crap"! I like your moxie...it likely took that rappel master a moment or three to recover from your reply...AND your action as you rappelled away! Clever and interesting flash fiction...

Thank you. 30 years later he remembered that minute at a reunion. Of course he tried to take credit for my courage. I appreciate you reading and reviewing my work.

Ah, isn't it great to have THAT recalled and repeated? Makes sense he'd skew it to give himself credit...but YOU know the truth!

I heard somewhere bravery isn't the absence of fear it's taking action in face of it. The only time you can be brave is when you're afraid. I don't who said those things I've repelled. It's an act of swallowing faith followed by scared shitless then followed by a rush of adrenaline.

Good for you, Earl!
A little bit of fear is a good thing...at least I have always believed it to be so. Gets the adrenalin rushing... And I would imagine the adrenalin would be coursing through one's veins to rappel off a tower.
Well-crafted flash fiction. And a memorable visual image!
Best Wishes!

A 50 words piece is difficult for me. I just posted a 75 word entry and thought I would have a nervous breakdown! Excellent job Earl! Not a word wasted in your mini drama! All my best to you in the contest!

Good for you. It reminded me of when I took the fireman's test. We had to climb up a ladder that was standing straight up. I have a fear of heights. It wasn't my favorite test, especially since when we got to the top, we had to cross over and come down the other side. Bravery is not the absence of fear. It's being afraid, but doing it anyway.

I think that was a very good answer to a less than compassionate rappel master, being afraid isn't what makes one a coward, it's refusing to be brave. I'll bet he always remembered.that quip. Well dine, great entry in this contest, good luck, blessings, Roy

I really enjoyed your story. Fear can be negative when portrayed in a story, but in just a few words you wrote a great story! You showed fear and courage both, within a few words of each other and it was dramatic and good. I always like it when the story has a happy ending.

This speaks how fearlessly, and confidently you answered the rappel master, after you came up the tower; well said, well done. Keep Writing -- DR ALCREATOR

Just because one shake doesn't mean one is a coward everyone is scared of something even the man who ran his mouth to you has a phobia of some kind.
