Sounds like you planned well and learned about the taxes in different states as well as the best insurance plan. So glad that you were safe in that accident! And how wonderful of you to check on the other injured people!

Hi Alie. You've made some great points in your stories so far which advise potential "life-on-the-road people" the intricacies of that interesting life. There's a lot more to this nomadic lifestyle than one would think. An interesting read as always.
Please check out this line:
"She flipped her vehicle through the medium (median) and into the oncoming traffic."
The lines that separate the lanes of a road are called "median."

Wow! I could visualize that accident. "Poor Jim was literally standing up with his foot on the brakes to stop."
Interesting information about the red tape involved when leading that kind of life.
"After crossing the bridge, we had at least a ten-inch drop from the bridge to the road surface."
My heart would have dropped too.

I hear those campgrounds are a whole different culture. :-)

Sounds like a hard way to live... but fun, too. Once you get the right vehicles and know what to avoid, you can go anywhere you like for only twenty bucks per night, often less. No property taxes, no lawn to mow or roof to reshingle, and best of all, no weeds to remove! :)

Thanks for reading, reviewing and your great comments Phyllis. We have had to make adjustments but you are right- no lawns to cut, no weeds, we do have regular maintenance on the camper the same as one would on a house. I can do all of my dusting, vacuuming, washing floors, cleaning the bathroom in about an hour and half. The one thing that I missed for the first year was a garden, then I discovered window pots (duh), so I can plant tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers if I want, I usually do it one year then skip a year- just wash out the pots and buy a bag of dirt when I am ready to. Especially in the northern states the camp grounds can get pricey-like a $100 a night or $1800 a month and they are only open April 1 - Oct 31. But for now it is an adventure.

Having owned a camper, albeit a small one for a while, I found the comparisons between UK and USA laws and customs very interesting. Very few people in UK go for anything bigger than a converted bus, mine was a converted three and half ton van which was a godsend because many smaller campers over here when loaded up for the holiday actually exceed the legal weight, but the twin wheels on the rear axle meant that I had little to worry about.

Your insurance seems a lot cheaper over there than in UK.

This was a very interesting and well written article.

Thank you so much for reading, reviewing and for your kind comments. When I visited I did not see the large campers either and wondered why. We pay a tire tax as well as insurance and registration.

Most of the interesting places in this country are accessed by country lanes and you would have difficulty negotiating those in a semi.

You are so right, I think I figured that out half way through the first week.

Question time, Alie. Why do you have tire Insurance? We don't here. There might be restrictions on the size of the rig. What is a CDL driver licence? Don't think we have them either. Okay, enough questions. I am like you in some regards, Alie I love to hear about people in caravans where they go and what the towns have in them ( and don't have. Your gambling laws, things like that fascinate me.)
Do the cat and your dog travel in the rig or in the van part or is that all one, with no separation? Tell me more I read every word, and enjoy every word. Love U Anne.

LOL okay I will be answering some of those question in my writing, but here goes Anne. The tire tax is something some states have and others don't, we still have to pay vehicle insurance. A CDL is a 'commercial driver license' which is required by tractor trailer trucks, buses, anything commercial including taxis- it is additional educational to a regular driver course, there are lots of rules and regulations for commercial drivers- such as the weight they carry, how many hours they can be on the road behind the wheel- I think it is 14 hours and then they have to stop for 10. I am not sure if you have such restrictions- I watched a program a few weeks ago about a triple towed grain truck that had to do a 500 mile round trip in 24 hours. Wow. The cat and dog travel in the rig with us, the rig and the camper are separate and when we hitch up it is a similar hitch to a semi and tractor trailer connection. This I will not include in my writing, for your eyes only- we used to let the cats ride in the camper, until Jim's cat died because of a stupid accident within the camper after we got the new one. Whew that was a lot to answer but I enjoy your questions. I will change around the next post to cover these questions. Luv u Alie.

Despite the fact I am unlikely to ever drive what you have described, many people do or will. In light of that, your story is very beneficial to many people. It is well put together as well as invaluable to such people.

One small correction....

She flipped her vehicle through the MEDIAN and into the oncoming traffic.

Many people are unaware and use the word "medium" rather than "median".

It's good to be free and roam the world. It sounds like fun, but I bet you have a lot of problems sometimes. Like blowouts, maniacs on the road, driving and sleeping. Then there's the crazies wanting to chop off a head or two. All of that on the Highway to ????. How long are you guys going to do that? Until you can't drive anymore? Listen to me I'm acting like my dad. I must be getting old. I wish you the best in whatever venture you guys do. While you are free I'm glued to the chair watching life go by. I'm jealous.

Yes, we have what is called an "agreed value"insurance, which functions in a similar way to yours, a replacement to the tune of a new vehicle. Liked your advice, well done, Grandparent duties keep us from being "grey nomads" (did we ever retire? Well dine, blessings, a good read. Roy

Raving can cost you an arm and a leg if you don't know what it all entails and you are a rookie. My friends are constantly having to make repairs before and after and sometimes during their trips. They are hooked on RVing.
