This is a brilliant poem, Carol. Birds are a sheer delight, and likening the hearts, imaginations and words of poets to birds taking the message around the world, is beautiful.
Your free verse flies like an eagle. Terrific read from your quill. :)

Thanks, Gloria. It was a break from my recent themes, probably a relief to most people here, lol.

Hello Carol,
Ah, poems are very much like birds, words taken by the wind,
swooping like the cliff sparrows.
From the tiniest darting hummingbird to the roaring eagle
So, too, the poet whispers, chants, and roars
You have a gift for free verse's imagery, my friend
Well done
Robert

I recently went to a poetry reading where the poet had written an entire book of poems about birds. I wish I'd had this one to read then (it was an open mic after the main reading).
thanks, Robert. Don't you just love cliff swallows?

-Good artwork and presentation, Carol.
-I like the title and the poem.
-The imagery is effective as
you take us on a journey, reciting poems,
reading scripture, the words
going out into the world, free.
-I also like the nature references
and the conclusion.
-Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your poetic experiences. I particularly admired your "cliff sparrows swoop" simile and hyperbole about the "eagle" and flying "in bright silhouettes". Cheers- Joan

Thanks so much, Joan. Will you go to Ricardo's workshop later this month? Did I already ask you that? It would be great to see you there :))

This is quite beautiful and very cleverly written. Great description and word use to bring together a powerful piece full of imagery.

"We are Poet's", is an extremely well-written and delightfully descriptive piece. This talented poet's work was a pleasure to both read and review. To me, this is a six, but unfortunately I only have fives left. I look forward to seeing your next post.

What a stunning poem. I love the analogies of the words flying free like the birds (crows, sparrows, and eagles... cliff sparrows' swoop--that line truly stood out for me. Well written!

Thank you! I was thinking about the deep sandstone canyons in Southern Utah, and how the cliff swallows use to swoop and dive beside the cliffs...

This is lovely Carol. You do free verse particularly well. Good use of metaphor in 'and our simple words flew out into the darkening air.' Lovely use of simile in 'We let our words go free, like cliff sparrows' swoop and vertiginous fall;' Beautifully worded piece and a good read. Warm regards Dorothy x

Thank you, it was actually based on a dream that I had and I decided to tie in a bird theme :))

Awe Carol, this free verse poem is beautiful. I really liked your message within and you portray such a great imagery. I especially liked:
The eagles roared out from their nests
and then I knew where You had gone,
all those years ago.
Our words found all the living
as old night lifted,
and the first rays of sun lit the world,
and we flew in bright silhouettes
across the sky.
Wonderful. Warm regards. Ulla:)))

I don't know about "we", but you, for sure, are a poet. You seem to have a very emotional connection to people, places, and primitive, archetypal, experiences, and an ability to put those deep feelings into lovely words.
This one almost defies dissection because it has such a unity to it, even though it addresses different aspects to it: there is the archetypal nature of poetry ("chanted scriptures of old fire / and never-forgotten longing;/ of deep history; centuries-old blood"), the is bookended by a poetic reflection on a specific relationship - through it all runs a reflection on the ability of poetry to give voice to what is transcendent and permanent in life and love. Just wow!

Yes "we" are poets, I thought about it for quite awhile and the decision is final, lol. Thank you for the words you wrote here. Someone asked me recently at a poetry open mic thingy if I was Native American - which I thought was a huge compliment. I am not, but I feel the disgrace of what "white men" did to them very deeply, and Richard Hugo did as well. His poetry is just stunning although it can take some getting used to.
I think the "You" in the poem is not necessarily a specific person, but all those lost somehow, or a belief system, or...God? Who knows?
Thanks, Mark :))
