What a riveting tale of determination and hard work! So many would have fallen back into their bed, moved to their wheelchair and accepted their fate. YOU defied the doctor's grim prognosis, set out to rehab against all odds and setbacks and have climbed right back up and gotten in the race! Not just the 5K races--an outstanding accomplishment. The human race!
I've only five stars left...but I give them with that elusive virtual six I wish I had...and a gold medal for "showing up!"---Triumphant! Not only were you a contest winner with this... You're a winner, PERIOD!--Karenina

A tale of guts and determination in the face of adversity. It is not difficult to see why this story was awarded first place by the judges of the committee. It is an excellent write.

Thank you very much for your kind words.

It was a very good read. Captivating and emotion stirring at same time. While the actual ordeal described sends shivers down ones spine, the writing style helps hurry to the end. I wish you all the best.

What can one say other than you are one very determined customer. Stories like yours inspire me. I think back to Douglas Bader, the legless world war 2 British Spitfire pilot. You sir are in the same category.
I salute for your courage, your wife too deserves credit. I respect you for amazing refusal to never surrender and I wish I had a small degree of your tenacity.

This is an amazing story my friend and I admire your determination and strength. Also,I must say you have a Gem in your wife Anna. Many women would bail out of a situation such as that. Good job on the essay. I see you are a winner here as well. LOL :)Nancy

This story is totally inspiring and well-written. What a set of circumstances. This ought to be set up for a novella to take you through life up to the fall, the depressing prognosis, therapy, improvement, hip replacement, and the 5 Ks. Just a fascinating and motivating series of events. Congratulations on your recovery and good luck on all your future endeavors.

A truly brave and inspiring story, Earl. Not too long at all. I think you told it exactly as it should have been told. You started with the race, a great metaphor for your life after the accident, and showed the reader it was not going to be easy. Then you explain so clearly exactly why and tell us how you finished, with extraordinary determination and fight. I do not think it could be any better. Winning the prize for the contest is the perfect ending. Congratulations!!

What a great story of triumph and overcoming the odds! This is a very inspirational story and I'm glad that you've told it. I am disabled and find your story to give me courage to show up. Even if I place dead last, I'd place. You've done a great job. Congrats on the win!
