Great advice, Alie! It has happened to us and we now just stopped using our bank debit cards because of just this thing. And it was also at a gas station at a town not too far from us. In two days, that thief got himself new tires and a fill-up and a bunch more snacks. We caught it that day but it took six months before the bank would remove the thief's charges. Thanks for warning and hope we all stay safe!

Thank you so much for reading, reviewing and your great comments. I am so surprised that the bank let it go on for six months, amazing. We noticed the same day but charges were made all over the country and in foreign countries as well, once we faxed the forms back to the bank our account was corrected that day. What a shame you had to go through that.

I appreciate you sharing the warning. It's interesting that it was at a gas station. My husband is careful to check for card skimmers but now I bet hackers are trying new methods. Sigh.
Mary Kay was so blessed to hear about your and Jim's involvement with TAT! 💖💖

Glad that we could have been a blessing to Mary Kay. Hugs.

Thank you for the warning. Well written. I'm sorry this happened to you. A family member is going through the same thing. Trying to correct the error is time consuming and emotionally draining. There are a lot of nasty people out there who prey upon good people. Marilyn

Thank you for reading and reviewing Marilyn, I am so sorry that you have a family member going through this. I guess my wish is for the good people to overcome the nasties.

All good advice, Anonymous Author.
You're also right, gas stations, at the pump, are the number 1 hot spots for using your card and having your identity stolen.
Having a credit monitoring watchdog in place - like LifeLock, for example - is never a bad idea.

I value your warning about identity theft. It has happened to me, too. However, the writing certainly needs better punctuation and grammar. For example,
It affects everyone, everywhere. If you have not become a victim, you are simply lucky, and your time will come.
How des this sound:
It affects everyone, everywhere. If you have not been a victim, you are lucky, but your time will come.
Best for the contest.

Thank you for reading and reviewing. It was sort of a last minute entry and I was trying to get the thought across but you are right, thanks.

You're right. Eventually, everyone will become a victim. I had my identity stolen. What a pain to get things straightened out. Hope you get many reviews on this. Your examples are good. I've heard about the gas pumps deals.
I didn't understand how the bank card worked and got rid of it after two months. My credit cards are limited to two.
Writing wise, I feel you could eliminate the first sentence and start with Scams and Hacking.

Thank you so much for reading and reviewing and for your kind comments, if I eliminate the first sentence I would not meet the 200 word requirement and several have commented on the great way to start it, so for this one I will leave it, but I do understand what you are talking about. Thanks.

These are situations that create a bad day... this has happened to my daughter more than once... she finally just goes inside to pay for her gas... so sad. Thanks for sharing, and good luck in the contest

Thank you for reading and reviewing and your good luck wishes. Oh my, I do feel for your daughter but going inside is the wisest, the scammers can't affect the machines inside apparently.

True ... but time consuming, but in the end, worth it . Have a good day

In the world of today you just can't be careful enough. I'm your typical tech dino and being German (where money is hardly used and cheques went out of fashion shortly after 9/11), my only rememdy is to keep checking my online banking and making sure I shop at more or less the same places - that includes restaurants and petrol stations!
The tricky bit is when we travel...

Thank you for reading and reviewing, I was not aware of the paper trail stopping in Germany when it did, it makes a lot of sense. I agree that the tricky part is when travelling which I do all the time. What I have learned is that chains of restaurants are rarely affected and although annoying use stations were you have to go in to have the card scanned. Those that jimmy the pumps can't do so unless the pumps accept cards. Again thanks.

Yes. I don't think I've possessed or seen a cheque since about 1999!

That may not be a popular topic, but it is quite helpful. Especially the part where it says that it will "never happen to me", a reminder that scams can attack everyone.
