Oh, Jo!

I wasn't expecting THAT ending at all. Bless her sweet heart. And all the more so since you say this is based on real people. That is so tragic. And you've told it beautifully. Thank you for sharing!

Yes, Robyn, this is a personal story of my husband and me. He is gone but every time I hear this song I think of this particular time in our lives when we danced to that song.

Saying goodbye to the love of your life is so difficult and so many families, young and old, live these very moments every day. Your poem brought a tear to my eye. The significance of the song is obvious and marks a very poignant moment in the piece. Well-written and touching story of love never-ending. Thanks for sharing your work and good luck!

D.K, thank you for your kind comments and six stars, I think of the young families still giving up their young men and women to fight for our freedom. My husband is gone now but every time I hear this song I remember the night we danced after he had to fly back to base after we had been married only three days. He was my Jr. High thru Highschool sweetheart.

Much too young to have that sort of grief piled upon you. And so long ago. Your ability to survive such heartbreak speaks volumes about you. And the memories, I'm sure will never leave, though you do move on.
Love the song. And I'm sure you've survived the years far better than old Merle did.

Bob, I smiled when you spoke of "old Merle). He did live a rough and tumble kind of life but I think he is one of the greatest poets and songwriters of his time. He wrote for the common man/woman (not all flowery words ...kind of how I like to read and write my poems). :O) Yes, I did move on and re-marry.

This is so beautiful and also sad. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank you so much for sharing this and I wish you the best in the contest. There is nothing I would suggest that needs changing. It flows perfectly. Blessings, Cathy

So tragic and so poignant and so sorry for your loss,

I brought flowers and a fresh flag
Merle Haggard's voice from my phone sings
"Silver Wings". I hold myself and dance.

God Bless and Looking forward. yours, diana

I don't know who these young folk were, and it doesn't state whether the young man returned or not, but poignantly, because danger possesses its own mystique, that of uncertainty, and when that love is barely consumated, even more so, well done a beautifully composed free verse and tribute to love's double circunpmstance. Well done Jo, blessings, Roy

Thank you, Roy, for reviewing my story poem. It was written about my first husband. I still think of him every time I hear this song. No, he didn't die in Viet Nam ( a lot of my classmates did). He died of a sudden heart attack 5 years ago.

So sad, so sweet, so romantic. You describe every intricate detail of your time together beautifully. This sounds like a love story and I enjoyed reading it. Well done Justjo66!
