Very nice poem! Thank you for sharing it, and congratulations on winning the contest with it! I like Spam too; we used to have it at home now and again, and with pineapple too. Good memories!

Thank you for sharing your sentiments. Memories are precious.

A writer guess what I love spam and I don't have those type of memories I've always had a taste for it. Good for dad setting the precedent and leaving such flavorful memories. spam is good to me and I love it.

I really love this poem and how it reminds you of your dad. We used to eat spam too, still do actually, it's wonderful on a biscuit with a fried egg and cheese. This poem touched my heart as I was close to my dad too..he was also in WW2. In the second to the last line, I'm not sure if you meant to say table but if so you left off the T. Best of luck in the contest. :)

The town of Austin, Minnesota, founded in 1853, occupies just under 12 square miles near the state's southern border, with 24,700 residents as of the 2010 census. It is also home to a street called Spam Boulevard, a restaurant dubbed Johnny's Spamarama, and still more restaurants serving dishes like the "Spam De' Melt" (a grilled cheese stuffed with Spam, bacon, and sour cream). Austin's path to becoming known as "Spamtown, USA" started when George A. Hormel founded his namesake slaughterhouse and meatpacking facility there in 1891, after spending years working in Chicago slaughterhouses. George A. Hormel & Co. became officially incorporated by 1901, processing whole hogs, beef, and sausage casings from its facilities in Austin.
Just a little history for ya, Anonymous Poet.
My dad and I both loved the stuff, but my two younger brothers and mom wouldn't eat it.
That just meant more for us, heh-heh.
Good luck!

Thank you so much, Dean, for the history of Hormel and Spam! I've been told Spam is an acquired taste - but I love it and so do my cousins who live in Hawaii. It's quite popular there. It's funny how our sense of taste can bring back so many sweet memories. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and your sentiments. Glad you're feeling better.

What precious personal memories wrapped forever up in that classic 'canned Spam'-of a dad's 'good times shared with his fellow comrades'- memory lingers within in so many diverse ways

Yes, our senses can trigger so many memories - and taste is certainly a strong one. Spam for my dad and green tea for my mom. Thank you for taking the time to read and review - and to share your sentiments.

Wow, you took your favorite food and brought meaning to it... it's more than just the taste! Though, I will say, eating spam with rice is delicious in itself, no memories attached. Spam is good, just cook it right! Enjoyed reading.

You're absolutely right. Spam isn't bad if you cook it right. Thank you for taking the time to read and review my trip down memory lane with my Dad.

When it is made properly, there is nothing wrong with good Spam. I've fried it up from time to time in place of sausage or bacon and it has a nice spicy taste to it.
This poem was very well written. It was fun to read poetry about a subject that doesn't usually lend itself to the medium.

You're right! Spam can be just as good as bacon or sausage if you crisp it. Appreciate your dropping by to read and review.
