This is an awesome poem.... the picture is phenomenal... it is so perfectly befitting for your poem... how the person who has departed, is as much a part of you, as that perfectly fitting piece to the puzzle -- as it connects, fits in and completes its counterpart.... lovely!

Well done on your first one, they can become addictive and a lot of fun. The third line(pivot line) is crucial to a good Tanka, it has to work in both the upper and lower part of the poem... yours does ; )

Yes, you 'have it right'. A very poignant piece and well constructed.
In passing, as you have used a couple of commas, you may wish to consider the balance of the punctuation? Just a thought - it reads well as it stands.
