Well, it seems Lucky's name jinxed him good. Should never have started bragging. I love this line:

'then marry yourself a cowboy. Between him and the fleas you'll never be lonely.'

I was also surprised to learn that the cattle herders were paid by the actual number of animals at their destination. But, of course, that makes sense.

Well done!

Bev

This reminds me of some of the TV westerns of my childhood, when I lived near places where some were filmed. And I wondered if you had heard of one named,
'Sugarfoot" which was very like your rendition here?

Your writing reminds me of the older Westerns.
As a tribute and not a copy
Western writers of yesteryear and the dime noels

An interesting chapter where we see the reality of being a cowboy on a cattle drive. It's certainly not what they make it seem in the movies. All of those glorify the activity and make people want to jump on a horse and take off after them.

I live on a farm, have been injured by a bull, and know better.

Thanks for sharing your chapter,
Rhonda

Hi Thomas,

Poor old Lucky, but hey, this crap happens. The west was a tough old place in many more ways than one.

Another fine chapter.

Are you still telling this from the narrator's point of view? If the story is about Lucky, you might bring him in by name earlier in the story. You really give a great description of how tough being a cowboy was. I can understand the importance of the cook. The cowboys must have worked up quite an appetite trying to keep the herd together. My mother said the same thing about eating a peck of dirt. This would have been quite an awakening for young Lucky. Full of hopes of joining the Wild West show, Lucky was crushed against the car's railing. So much loss of life in those times. judi

I have a reason for not naming the traveler yet.

You're very welcome. I don't know why you're not naming the Traveler, but it's not what I was concerned about. Maybe you need to have something at the beginning of this chapter that this is what you found out Lucky, and mention him. judi

I guess sometimes you can push your luck too far.
Lucky might have been wiser to steer (pun intended) clear of the herd.
I like this tale, it takes me back to my youth when all my father would watch on T.V. was the news and westerns.
That is until the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie started.
Excellent writing!

The cattle drive. Those must have been some unique experiences. Seems "Lucky" is smart enough to know how to make some money in the Wild West Show. As far as he is concerned, the others can follow a bunch of smelly cattle up the trail. Will continue to follow this story.

Between him and the fleas you'll never be lonely - good chuckle line that one. A sad note to end on with Lucky Wilson seeming to be not so lucky after all. Great chapter, I enjoyed it, well written and holds the readers interest,
cheers.
