Thank you so very much for this tribute, in your 5-Line Poem. I owe my being a member of a poetry group in Pasadena, California to Alvin. We met on FanStory and discovered we lived only forty miles apart, and he invited me to two of his poetry groups and one really spoke to me. Unfortunately, we lost Alvin in 2014, but I was able to say goodbye at his service in Claremont. His words really do live on--I just quoted him yesterday at our weekly, poetry salon: "Remember to read haiku aloud twice, so that listeners can absorb your message." Best wishes in the contest- Joan

Dear Mrs. KT,
At first I was quite confused in regards to the meaning of the poem, however after reading your notes and then reading the poem again I understood. You have accurately portrayed the loss of a friend with an opening that has impact.

Thank you for using this Five Line poem to give tribute to this previous Fanstorian. I don't know him as I didn't join until 2016. I like that you end with the positive note that his "words live on."

Hello Mrs. KT I like your five line contest entry.
How nice to know that you also knew of Alvin T Ethington.
I came here on FS in 2006 and as you said in your notes
how he gave you encouragement along with positive and critical feedback,
SAME for me I found him an incredibly gifted poet and playwright,

I'm sorry that you just heard about this. I do love how we come together as a community and inspire each other so much. There are a couple on here that I absolutely love and I'd be so heartbroken if they were no longer here or if something happened. *Hugs*

Hello!
Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful review.
I have kept in touch with two former Fanstory members over the years, and I have even visited one a few times in Colorado. Alvin's passing has really affected me on a number of levels...

We all hope our words live on and this is short, bittersweet and most poignant. It is almost an epitaph and your friend and mentor would be most proud of it. I have a soft spot for haiku, tanka and other such short forms and I have enjoyed the sentiment here.

Hello,
While this poem is dedicated to a particular individual, it can be applied to many individuals. Additionally, the individual to whom this offering is dedicated was not my mentor; he was a friend.
You state that this offering is "most poignant" and that you "have enjoyed the sentiment here." Your rating does not reflect either sentiment.
Thank you for stopping by.

A very well-written five line poem. I am sure it must have been a great shock learning of a great friend and poet psssed away nearly four years ago and it shows in your poem.

Yes, this is a nice tribute to your friend and valued sounding-board, Alvin T. Ethington. Many of us have experienced such a loss of someone with whom we had been out of touch for just long enough to be too late in one way or another. You express such feelings well here. Yet, as you rightly mention in the last line, besides the memories you cherish, he has left his words that may outlast even you and all others who knew him directly. Well done, and aptly illustrated.

Hey, Mrs. KT. What a lovely tribute to our FanStory instructor and friend, Alvin. I took classes from him and he was incredibly dedicated to not only poetry in general, but also deeply engaged in Japanese forms. I learned a great deal from him, and miss dearly.
Thank you for sharing and I wish you well in the contest.

Oh, Diane, my heart bleeds for your distress. It's doubly hard to mourn a friend so long after his passing. I greatly admired Alvin's talent and perfectionism as related to the craft. I miss him, too. :) Nancy

Thank you for your thoughtful and kind-hearted reply.
So caught up in living... more than a little humbling and sobering when I discovered his passing last evening...
Be well!
