You really capture the pathos of this Christmas Eve as a mother and wife spends it alone, hoping and praying her men folk will come home soon from war. Nicely set in the Civil War era. And good use of the Christmas star which gives her hope.

This poem is very emotional and full of strong images of marching soldiers. We for get the loneliness of the families with soldiers deployed and that of the soldiers too.
This is true of any war. This gives us hope that Christmas miracles do happen.
