I thought it was a masterful tribute to those who need to learn, grow, and identify with those who lost friends in the war and those who came home, as lost and sometimes unwelcomed souls. You do a great credit to those you served with. I served after Nam during peace time. But get the value of the VA and have benefited from it.

Powerful words about the lasting effect of the horrors of war. You've done well to present the depth of mental scarring that remains long after the battlefield.

Six stars, Everett, for the poem and your notes. I wear the guilt of not going to Vietnam. One half inch too tall. Could have signed a waiver, but I did not. Sorry.

This was a tragic poem. To be trapped by the guilt of surviving where others didn't. You have woven a tapestry of darkness and delusion all brought on by war. Senseless war but has been around since the earliest of man kind. Very sad poem. Gretchen

I can see this poem when it was first posted was a 'Poem of the Month contest entry'. I am sure it showed well. It's very good and yes, demons follow our soldiers' home. Thank you for reposting it.

I always like your poems. They rhyme well.
I find this line scary as I still have nightmares about the Vietnam war.
"They speak with tremored voices of the dead,
Then slowly crawl all over your bed."
Why war? We gain nothing but names on a wall.
Thanks for sharing the feelings about the war.

Excellent in every way. You really caught the inner life of the traumatized. It read easily for such a serious theme. Thank you for this. Glad you revived it.

The cost of that skirmish (?), never a war, was far deeper than the trillions spent on butting in thinking we'd make a difference, which we did, but what was it and did it make life better or worse once we retracted? Fifty thousand dead and three times more mentally afflicted.

A very stirring and heartfelt verse about the trauma of these incredible soldiers. Your final repeated couplet says it all in so few words, so evocatively. Well done and good luck! Debbie
