Hi Rod. This poem is outstanding. The image is gorgeous and your words resonate with this animal lover. In the past couple of years I've lost two who were Leo's age. We love our pets and suffer when they become infirm and pass. We swear we'll never get another one and go through that pain again, but then we see another who needs a home and do it all over again. Your poem is very well written and heart rending. Marilyn

Thank you so much for the beautiful, compassionate review of "Summer's Gone," Marilyn and the galaxy of stars. Leo has been gone almost a year, and the other day I was asked what I want for Christmas. "Another dog,"I said. I'm being selfish, of course, as the rest of the family is not ready for a new pet. Just don't take me any where near an animal shelter, or . . . Rod

Hi Rod. All of my animals are rescues. When one leaves, I feel it leaves room for another one who desperately needs a home. Good luck whatever you decide. Marilyn

A wonderful but really quite sad poem.
It certainly touched me reading this, I guess I can sort of identify with it myself.
As I write this my rather elderly black lab is resting his bones by an open fire bless him, he's getting a bit creaky now too.
Great piece of writing, well worthy of its recognised status.

I am delighted you enjoyed "Summer's Gone," but I am sad you can identify so easily with the Speaker. Thank you for sharing and for your very kind praise. Rod

This is just lovely Rod. A perfect poem for the 'sad' contest, because it is a sad story. You chose an unusual rhyme scheme - lst and 4th line in each stanza rhyming and it works. I loved the read and wish you well in the contest. Warm regards Dorothy

Leo lived quite a long time for a large dog. The poem reflects the sadness of youth gone, we often see this in our animals as they age. You have a vivid use of words that appeals to the senses and emotions.

A thoughtfully crafted poem about the aging process and how it catches up with both the furry and not quite as furry haha, inevitably and often quite sadly. No matter how old and decrepit we get, we never tire of dreams where we are running free with the wind in our hair, or ears and we can slobber profusely haha
A vivid and engaging read, despite the tired subjects LOL
I loved "my youth has fled"
Superbly done. We had a rottweiler that lived around 12 years. Unfortunately she was starting to get arthritis and also getting narky towards our toddler which was a huge worry, so heartbroken, we had her put down.
You must have looked after your dog extremely well.
Cheers P

Hi there;
Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem about Leo. Dogs rarely realize the passing of time. I've often wondered how my pets felt in their last months and days when they couldn't do anything they did before. I've always felt their deaths were a blessing - though I missed them so much,

Thank you so much, patty, for your sympathetic review. Yes, I remember asking the vet, "Is he in pain," and being told, "No, he's merely old." At the end, though, his death was a blessing as he had collapsed and could not get up. Rod

While watching him, I'm sad, withdrawn,
as I, too, creak, my joints all ache.
But unlike him I realize
his youth has fled, that Summer's gone.'
I'm dogone sick the summers gone and so are my two dogs...a brilliant write love and regards Meia x

Thank you so much for sharing my poem, Meia. I am very sorry for your loss. Please reread my poem as I just added bio to the author's notes. Rod
Comment from Sandra du Plessis
A very well-written heartfelt sad poem. Sadness for animals that suffer can be overwhelming for an animal lover. We always wonder if they know they are suffering and why.

Comment from Ogden
I'm taken with your reflection on old Leo. I, also, identify with him, as described by you.
I have one suggestion. In the last line, I think "my youth" would be more poignant.
Excellent work, Rod!

Thank you so much, Don, for sharing "Summer's Gone" and your astute suggestion.
I pondered which pronoun to use in that line: "his," "our," or "my." It's really nice to get an objective viewpoint. Rod

I wrote a review for this and it disappeared so I am not sure what is going on and why someone is deleting this.
Just wanted to review all the contestants before making choice.
As a pet lover, this is beautiful.
Lovely work.
My best wishes, and good luck.
