easyeverett1,
This poem perfectly describes the medley of experiences soldier's live during times of war. Your statement that "combat and romantic relationships are forged and forever revered as the single most transformative and transcendent experience of a lifetime." speaks to the lifelong effect of surviving the tragedy of war.
All the best,
Eugene

I used to read books on the conflict in Vietnam. Had 2 uncles who served and remember friends of my older brother and sister going over. Some returning, some not so lucky. I never knew about Korea and their part. One uncle said it was the most beautiful battlefield he'd ever seen. Your poem was poignant and beautiful. Haunting piece. Gretchen

This is your best piece ever. So riveting. I've read it three times now, once aloud, and am in awe of the emotion and catharsis you evoked in me. Terrific work, and you've got my six stars for sure. Thank you, as always, for posting.

Thank you for sharing this with us. I am sorry I missed it the first time around. This is extremely emotional. My husband did 23 years and our oldest son did 26 years in the Army. Thank you for your service. There's no way civilians understand the cost.

The rating is less than deserved but all I have. Good tribute to the fallen. Yes, the Koreans learned from having to do so. They fought a hard fight in their own nation, I can understand the other's fear of them. From the hills of covered ice and snow to the sweltering heat of a jungle. Much to contend with. THANS FOR DOING YOUR PART.

Not your usual style, EE, but on 2nd reading I bumped your star rating up from 4 to 5, as I recognise the quality is still there despite those teeny short lines and the plethora of verses, which seem to me a bit school-boyish. But what would I know, I've never been a schoolboy. A bientot, you prolific person!

I was not a schoolboy when sent to Vietnam. I was twenty-three years and five thousand miles from home. I wrote this in the plane on the way home while conversing and crying with all the other schoolboys. easy

A very fitting tribute to the soldiers. I like that you point ot the role of the Korean Marines, something most people don't know about. With Veteran's Day approaching, this is a great poem.

Thank you very much Thomas. Because of my job as liaison Officer to the ROK Marines I spent time in Korea and watched them train. Their training makes basic training in the US Military look like a trip to the country. I have taken my family to Korea twice since 1970 and am more impressed each visit. Thank you Thomas. tom

This is a truly great piece of writing. Thank you as well for the complete author notes. It made the metaphors burst forth clearly. I have never fought in a war; however, the heat in times like that must be too immense to ignore. Love and Death exist together there. Truly great piece of writing!!!!!

Painfully beautiful in truth...
I wore the black silk dresses from Saigon and saw the hell in the eyes of my loved one whose spirit had been tortured by visions. I saw the photos of bodies piled high on wagons...oval eyes staring at the sky. I, too, was a casualty of war as he brought it home to me.
Your poem is so poignant and the notes tell us more.

Thank you so much Nika for the great review and for sharing your life
experience with me. A terrible time in history that a lot of men and women carry with them for a lifetime. Thanks again Nika. tom
