I love that you use this medium to share important relationship good values in a warning way. 'You don't know what you have until it's gone'. Your words are to live by. Great!

Thanks again my friend for your terrific review and rating, I really appreciate it. I joined this site nearly eight years ago strictly for the contests. I am in it for the community, to express myself, and to learn. There are so many talented writers and I don't claim to be anything but novice,.

A lot of poignant truth written into this poem.

Never take loved ones for granted. All too soon they may not be there.

Then it is too late.

I don't know how I missed this, Bill, but I am really happy to have run across it now.
So sorry to have missed out on the voting, but it appears as if you didn't need my help after all.
I could certainly see why this won the Naani writing prompt.
Your syllable count is well within the limits set forth by the Naani form, and you have even managed to incorporate a bit of a rhyme scheme into the mix.
No easy feat, for sure.
It is an expressive piece-- a bit of a cautionary poetic tale, if you will--reminding us to embrace our loved ones while they are still members of the living and breathing rather than lamenting about what we could have done with and for them after they've passed on.
Excellent work, Bill.
Congratulations on your win.

Thanks Deano, I appreciate your excellent review. My Dad passed away several years ago and the only time I can remember us telling one another that we loved each other was when I left home to join the Air Force. I was eighteen years old and we both thought I would end up in Vietnam and possibly never see each other again.
I returned home after four years of service. Which most of that time was spent in South East Asia.
Dad died suddenly a few years later with congestive heart failure and I don't remember either of us saying "I love you." That's bothered me ever since. However, that taught me a lesson and it's never happened again with other loved ones that has passed.
Sorry for going on so long. Have a great day buddy. Bill

No need for apologies, Bill. I appreciate the fact that you let me in on a little bit of the background on the reasons as to what prompted you to write your poem.
You're more than welcome, my friend.

I enjoyed reading your authors notes almost as much as your poem. It is true that life is short and we need to not take our loved ones for granted.

Cedar: thank you for sharing this beautiful poem with me! I appreciate this and I know this poem will touch many hearts and souls. We need to treasure our precious family and friends. Life is too short. My friend in Denver lost two friends with two weeks of each other. His girlfriend has pain where she can't move without crying. I am praying Nat and Terry through this for them to be healed and whole in Jesus Name. My father was a chaplain who prayed with vets. Yes, treasure times together.

Keep in touch, Bill. God bless! flylikeaneagle CONGRATS ON YOUR WIN!!!

That is so true. Often we don't appreciate those around us, until they're gone. And we never really know what others are going through. A little kindness or patience could make a big difference for someone. Great poem.

Heartfelt and honest. I lost my mom ten years ago and everyday I still miss her. I often give others this very advice. I can see why this won an award. Great piece.

Firstly congratulations on being a winner and reading this I can see why. I found this to be a very moving poem and it states something that none of us know, what our future holds for us. Well done.
