Think for yourself - more great advice with this week's acrostic challenge. New concept, new ideas, that's so true -build and share it -
Look round, look up, look to yourself -
I love that line, great advice through life.
cheers, Craig, from the east coast, this is a good read, great advice.

Thanks for the kind words, Pearl, much appreciated. I'm heading up the east coast next week - not as far as you (Townsville, if I remember? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else). We're only going as far as Moreton Island, but I'm so looking forward to it :)

Yes we're in Townsville, NQ. Hope you enjoy your holiday, bit different from the middle of Aus.

Keep Vaseline Handy

Kids today, they all have it too good,
E ating's no problem, there'll always be food.
Everything's quick, impatience is common.
Patience, a virtue, eschews even our lawmen.

Values are great, if they make life worth living.
Add lots of hard work, it's all taking and giving.
Studying hard so you can do what you love
Earning a living that fits you like a glove
Living your life so happy, carefree
Instead of becoming somebody like me.
Never fulfilled, and bitter as hell.
Empty inside as a dry desert well

Having the whole world fall down at your feet
Abstain from all vices which lead to defeat
Nurture true love and just make it last
Do your own thing as you make people laugh
You'll never have to take "it" up the ass.

That would be the advice I would give any new, young up-and-comers in the world today, Craig. Keep a jar of Vaseline on hand, at all times. You're sure gonna need it!

You're advice in the acrostic you written and so well presented is a bit more subtle, and you wrote yours a whole helluva lot better than I just did. But, I think if they were to put 'em together and follow the advice given, they'd be alright.

Great job, nice presentation, too!

haha... that would have taken the challenge out, I'm sure, Dean :)

"Keep vaseline handy"... excellent advice, topped only by one thing I can think of - "tie a knot in it."

Thanks for the great and entertaining review.

I forgot all about the Potlatch challenge, Craig. I was working on an acrostic of my own for the Name Acrostic poetry contest, but it has since been disqualified. It's titled It's Alive!, and is at the top of my portfolio, if you get a chance to read it.

    It pays decent, LOL...

Hey, Craig,

I read through your advice acrostic to a graduating class

I've felt out of sync with the up and coming people...well, ever since the day I was standing with my own group of up and coming, looking forward. Looking back, it looks like the brains and thoughts of the youth are shaped/shaping different than that of the up and coming before them, and those before them. As it probably has been for each generation since the first cave teens graduated glub-club academy.

But no matter the phase of growth, securing your own individuality and self fortification, at that moment when at the brink of a major change... sound and needed advice, especially to a group phasing out of an institution that teaches information, and maybe not always how to seek and process information, and question information.

I like the use of 'mimicking' as the earlier stages of learning are all about mimicking. Do it this way... School is about a starting point... hold the pencil this way, write the letters like I am showing you, walk through these steps like this... Sometimes it goes so far as... don't question it, just do it. Stepping forward from that point, there should be a sitdown with those moving to the next phase to say, We might have been training wheels on your brain... the training wheels are coming off, try not to latch on to other peoples' thinking in search of new training wheels...

As the starting point for growth might be mimicking... the kids have been mimicking to grow to start... but thinking and learning and growing are so much more.

A profound and great flowing acrostic, smooth... not jerky or discontinuous from line to line.

Thanks, Turtle, for the lovely review. Yes, it's ironic in a way how by the time they are ready to leave school, they need to be un-learning the way they learn, in a way. Much appreciated, Craig.

This is a neat acrostic, containing some very good advice.
'Observe and learn throughout your life' - absolutely. There is always something new to learn. To paraphrase Terry Pratchett, one should not fear those who seek the truth. The people to be wary of are those who claim to have already found it.

You write with the same thought and integrity that you debate with. No surprise there. Since I couldn't write a poem, much less an acrostic, to save myself from certain death, I have the utmost respect for anyone who can.

Well done.

That's a very good quote, Emma. Would you believe I had to google Terry Pratchett? I learned something today. My other half would have known who that was. Thank you for the lovely review. This challenge is a bit of an adrenaline rush, since we have to do them "against the clock", so anything is likely to pop out. Have you tried writing poems? I find it hard to think you couldn't do a great job of it if you put your mind to it.

Hi CD,
This is fantastic, it all makes sense and is so easy to read. Great advice.
"Ideas are what have forged our world" I love that and how true it is.
A great read.

Very good advice for any young graduate entering the work force with book knowledge. Life is practical and although book knowledge is important it can't teach you everything. Learn by observing and copy before you put your knowledge to new inventions.

Oh hell, I read this hours ago. What a moron. I thought I reviewed this. Duh.
I thought this was killer as I thought I said. LOL
Love the rhythm of this. Very smooth and really fast paced. Advice I agree with and the best thing to tell somebody right from the git. It's up to you and no one else.
If everyone realized their life was their own, I think we'd live in a very different world. Great piece. So funny to see all these positive uplifting pieces. Some humour, but really good stuff. Even mine. HAHAHA! mikey

Yeah, after I read the first few, I thought to myself "I forgot to be funny!" Oh well, it is what it is. There was a good range of stuff.

I'm petrified Phyllis is going to throw a palindrome at us some time soon - Gloria has been threatening that.

Thanks for the nice rap :)

I'm pretty sure Gloria is set on it. Her will is too strong for me, what can I say. LOL
It scares the hell out of me. I know this, if we go down in flames, it won't be alone!!! I think we can expect it. I already said okay. What a punk, huh?

This is really good and talks about NOT being like other people. This line says it all: "You'll never grow by mimicking
Other peoples' way"
Great choice of words and very well put together.

Hi Craig!

I really like your ideas in the acrostic as you've presented here. You may want to define 'opine', most of the graduates probably haven't learned that word yet lol

Loved these lines:

Look round, look up, look to yourself
For your life is your own

Great advice and an awesome acrostic (with rhyme!)

Kim

Were we supposed to be giving advice? Hahaha, I totally missed that! OMG...I gotta stop doing this at work. But I work EVERY Saturday, dang it. Anyhoo...I like your poem a lot, especially the ending.
Look round, look up, look to yourself
For your life is your own
Very nice!

Personally, I think you should just forget about the unimportant stuff on Saturdays, and concentrate on Fanstory ;-)
