A beautiful, nostalgic view of your past and the good old-fashioned values of yesteryear when times were simpler. I loved that woman's take on the old traditions and the lessons from her mother about how to face each new day. This was very well-written and sweet, John. Jim

Yup, another nostalgic tradition (if that?s the correct word) gone by. Plus, all those years ago, not many families had dryers.
Thanks Jim. I appreciate your time.

Thanks for sharing that life lesson and that nostalgic moment, John! I wasn't quite sure what the "chirping sound" was - was it the pulley sound? Growing up, we did hang laundry in the back balcony but there was no pulley just a stationary clothesline. But haven't hung up any clothes ever since childhood. But I'm glad she was able to share that uplifting message with you! Hope you are feeling better today and recover fully soon!

Between those aluminum pulleys and the weather beaten clothesline, it made what I called this "chirping" sound.
Thank you, Helen for reading and sharing.
Feeling much better, though not 100%. Thank you for asking.

This is an excellent story. I enjoyed your window into the past. I remember a hand-cranked- washer. When she brought in the sheets in the winter, the sheets would stand up straight. There is no room for improvement. Have a blessed day.

I don?t recall the sheets like you mentioned, but I do remember those "unmentionables" being like that,
Thanks for creating and sharing.

You don't hang your washing on a clothes line John? You use a dryer? Really? I have never used a dryer for my washing, I always hang my washing out to dry, the fresh air makes the clothes smell good and dryers use up a lot of electricity. None of my family use dryers. How interesting that this is an old tradition in American, I learned something here, love Dolly x

My mother always hung clothes outside as did my mother-in-law. My wife always did until we moved to our current home. No one else did.
She still puts some blankets and quilts outside to "freshen up". Rarely seen is the clothesline anywhere. Sad but true.

I am amazed, everyone in Britain dries their washing on a clothes line! Ha ha ha x x x

This is good story. it reminds me of a few weeks ago when I was lost trying to find a freinds house. I looked for someone to ask directiona and what I found was a lady hanging out clothes. I was surpirsed too, because I hadn't seen that in several years. She was very friendly. She took me in her house and drew me a map. I learned a lot about her history, and she even walked back to my car to guide me down as I backed down her drive to the street. You never know what new experience a day might bring.

That is incredible. Very few people would bring a stranger into their home on a whim. You found one of the good ones!
Thanks for reading and sharing.

Excellent take of yesterday and what it held then. You did well with this story. I could see the pully and remembered some of my boyhood as well.

Absolutely. I can remember running through them face first. Heaven help you if a piece of laundry fell to the ground.
Thanks, Ben,

Thank you for sharing this piece of memory. I haven't been back to my hometown since 1986. I still hang up clothes when weather permits. I enjoyed this trip.
The Garwood Rest, a town tavern where my dad took me for my first legal beer when I turned seventeen. (I thought the legal drinking age was 21.)

Actually, in New Jersey the year I turned 17 the legal drinking age to 17. Realizing it was a mistake they did revert back to 21. By then I was legal either way. We 17 year olds didn?t argue!
Thank you, Barbara for reading and sharing.

Okay, I guess in the states I've lived in it's remained 21.

Twenty-one makes a little more sense than seventeen.

I suppose this was a moment out of time for you. Today, especially in the city, it is odd to have two strangers just strike up a conversation for little to no reason.
note:
I heard it {again.} and decided to seek it out.
