Earlier today I went to the library to renew my card (which I am ashamed to admit had expired in 2013) and was greeted by a similar epiphany, so it is somewhere between coincidence and synchronicity that I should stumble upon thiis post that reinforces this renewed hope in our collective intellect. Thanks for posting this well-written and well-timed observation.

Hey, Mark. Thanks for sharing the epiphany with me. Synchronicity's good. I don't buy coincidence. I'm happy you enjoyed my story.

A nicely written piece of writing Jay. I thought that your writing was cleverly constructed and well written. I thought that the dialogue and the description worked well and I couldn't find any faults. Thanks for sharing...Jacob

I have to say, this is actually written just like someone's uncle would be telling you at a family dinner. It is very realistic in the way people talk or tell things. well done

Comment from Gloria ....
What the heck?! It's not Christmas already is it? Surely my nap wasn't that long. HA!
Oh, so you have one of those grapevines too eh? My twin girls are a terrific grapevine that way.
LOL, a fifty cent gift card? Love it, that's something I'd do for sure. The difference is, I'd do it deliberately.
Ah yes, a fellow silentium lover. I think I've practically read every book in this small library, but I still love a good stinky, coffee stained book, mainly because you can't use e-books to start a fire when the house gets cold.
Kidding, Jay! Excellent Blog post. Do you still put blogs on the fire?
As always exceptional and most entertaining post.

Thank you, Gloria. Did anyone ever tell you you'd do well in stand-up ... or is that a hold-up ... which isn't the same as a push-up ... bra or ice-cream .... The blog is still there and I get a couple new subscribers a day, though I haven't posted anything new in about two years.
Thanks my dear for reading and for the generous rating.

A brilliant bit of introspection. I love the way you appear to ramble, but in fact you deliver truths that pack a punch. How right you are in thinking that our attention span is dwindling with all the crap that surrounds us. While there are queues in the library there is still hope.

Comment from Pam (respa)
-Nicely written essay that tells of unusual experiences with the gift card, the young man with all the books, as well as commentary on the lack of reading by so many involved in their video games, etc.
-I liked the style and enjoyed reading it. The situations came to life.
-I felt badly for your son and the mistake the movie theater had made, but then later on, glad that your wife was going to make good on the theater's mistake.
-The experiences in the library were meaningful ones with all ages there excited about books.
-Finally, I thought the conclusion was very effective:
"...thanks to this marvelous, beautiful army converging in to burst through the door and into the mystery world inside the whispering walls."

Hi Jay,
Another post I enjoyed reading. I liked the way you narrated and described feelings and events. I don't watch tv, but I do listen to to music. I read a lot, but books in my hands. I don't like kindle. even bought it, but sold it. I could not use it. For some reason, I hated it.

Kindle or conventional books. All are conveyors of magic, it seems. I'm so happy you read my post and got something of value from it.

I have wondered when I have turned on a TV program and saw Housewives of New York or something on this order. I was then told these programs were very popular and had high rating. My response was on the order of, are you kidding? Who would bother with such fabrication of life, (It's a reality show) My response was: Who's?? However, visiting the library and bookstores, I know there are many people still thinking for themselves and reading wonderful books. I liked this chapter and glad you shared it with me and others at FanStory.
