It is an interesting story. Ad an American, I can tell you that to nurse another's child here would be a bit of a stretch for the mother. We do have wet nurses though. I'd like to hope that I would have understood the meaning of 'nurse' in your country. Wasn't there any context that could have allowed the American woman to know the difference? Just like some will say to give the baby a squeeze. Just letting you know that not all of us would've reacted the same as the American woman in your story.
All of that being said, this was a great read! Well done!!

Thanks Kelly Hanna, I know there are some Americans with more common sense out there as to differences between our languages. Nice to meet you. Not sure we met before will check your stuff out. I just put up my autobiography for a final review before publishing after Tom found it for me in here when I lost it. Look for "The Little Dog That Wouldn't Let Go" if interested, thanks.

This is a very interesting and well written post you have penned about the meat pies that you had but are now gone. It is a good thing as I don't eat much meat these days. They looked really tasty! Blessings, Teri

Hi Sankey. First post in awhile, eh? Yeah there are others. I think face fall off means something in aussie. But here, it literally means someone is missing his face. Lol. Good job and educational. Thank you for sharing

Thanks friend. I just put up my autobiography for a FINAL review for newer friends. Hoping to progress to publishing real soon. So glad when folks from either Hemisphere admit even though we all speak English we have a whole nother word or a meaning to a same word. Cheers.

I knew that teetee (titi) meant grandmother in Sanish. I was with some Philippinos and a man. Just took the baby that was being shared at work. I said you like your titi, don?t you? In Tagalog it means penis

Thanks for acknowledging that even though we all speak English, same words have different meanings vin the different Hemispheres.

A very well-written story about the real meat inside that dough that covers it. It is one of my favorite dishes as well, especially the home made ones that are always much fresher than the bought ones.

I had to google it to get a better picture but it looks like a pot pie. Maybe slightly different shape but still looks like a pot pie to me. My husband is gluten free but every once in awhile we do pizza or something when we're on vacation or whatever. It's hard to fully let go of some of that stuff.

Well let him know the Dietitian says even if he has no reaction to Gluten...Ie cheating as I have done... if he is Diagnosed Celiac or Coeliac here he is damaging his bowel if he diverts from Gluten Free Diet. Thanks for coming by. There is also a debate between "Up Over" and "Down Under" regarding Porridge or Rolled Oats. Down here Coeliac Association says NO to rolled oats same as barley and wheat etc but some in America claim oats are not a problem, whatever. I am loving my Rice POrridge. Not sure if I said also delaing with Type 2 Diabetes..maybe I said that elsewhere. POt PIe sound familiar.

I think they have gluten free oats here. Like I wouldn't go and buy oatmeal anymore. There are gluten free oats in our store. I also thought maybe you could make the crust, then you can throw the stuff in the middle and make it gluten free. Today I started learning how to make gluten free casseroles. You know like tator tot casserole. Apparently cream of mushroom and cream of chicken soups have gluten so I have to get the gluten free ones but they are runnier so I have maybe make a rue to thicken them? It's a learning curve. We don't do gluten filled days that often, at least not like we use to.

The US has meat pies too, but my mother made terrific home-made ones. I haven't found any here in Mexico, but I am sure there are here too. I'll just have to ask where to find them.

I bet they are HOT in Mexico! Had my first Enchiladas(sp??) other day. a little chilli but not bad. When you said you would have to ask..I thought yo9u said ask your Mother hehe. I remembered she had passed on some years back. Thanks for coming by. I am surprised the number of my regulars who must have missed this last time around.

Thanks for reviving this chapter since I missed it the first time around. I like your title and sharing idiosyncrasies from Down Under. We get Aussie Bites at Costco in California, which are tasty, cookie-like snacks that are gluten free--are they available in your stores? Smiles- Joan

Sounds interesting. Thanks for not biting my head off for "picking on America" as someone accused me of earlier. Aussie Bites are they Chicken or ?? They sound like something a friend pointed me out to from our Coles Stores. Potato Gems not marked Gluten free and not in the Gluten Free area but they ARE Gluten free and I love em. They do chips (fries) Gluten Free as well. Pays to read the labels. Appreciate the lovely review. I figured a few of my regulars might have missed this the first time and I have edited it some more, too.

Yes, we have to read the labels and remember that things like barley are forbidden. The Aussie Bites have no bad grains and are fairly low in sugar. More smiles- Joan
reply by the author on 23-Sep-2018
yeah another battle as well being Type 2 Diabetic I think we talked about this before regarding all the SUGAR in Gluten free Cereals especially. Did I talk about recommending to one of our GLuten Free Cereal makers for "Maple Crush" that they use a Sugar Free Maple Syrup in the "Queen Range" for the Cereal.
reply by Joan E. on 23-Sep-2018
Yes, the sugar is a big problem--even in tomato sauce! It's one of the first things I look for on the labels. I think the Classico brand, if you get it Down Under, only has three grams and is reasonably priced. Even if you don't have gluten free pasta, you can fake it with spiral-cut zucchini squash. Good luck managing your diet restrictions- Joan

Not mad about Zucchini squirls have heard that one before. I love the Gluten Free Pasta.

Hi Geoff, You mean well. All you want is to promote your meat pies, and I find that's good. Well to nurse a baby means actually to breast feed it. Is that what you meant?
I have a smile on my face. All the best. Ulla:))

Ullla in America that is what it means. We get lost in differences of language but there are places where the Nurse word in America is also used as I indicated meaning to cuddle or hold...not necessarily for breastfeeding. Thanks for coming through. This has really put some cats amongst some pigeons and it is a very old story I first ran ages ago.

Hi Ulla same word different meaning up over to Down Under, thanks

Hi, Geoff. Well, the first part, I understood okay. The meat pies. We call them Pasties in the states, I think.

As for the nurse bit. I am lost. what are you trying to say there, Mate? Bob

 Comment Written 23-Sep-2018

reply by the author on 23-Sep-2018
Pasties are different here. Meat Pies are just meat and pastry. Pasties here are some vegetables and in some cases meat or not. Different structure as well. The American Missionary wife got offended when the MUm asked if she would like to "Nurse" her baby. I did not know that in some parts of America "Nurse" means the same as what we say here...ie cuddle.. apart from actual Nursing staff per se. This was an old story I edited a bit due to my change having become Coeliac or Gluten Free now. Thanks for coming by. I have already upset an American this morning hehe.
reply by Mastery on 23-Sep-2018
What is the big deal, Geoff? LOL Here in the States nursing means to suck a tit...plain and simple.
reply by the author on 23-Sep-2018
Yeah but there are places in your country that use the word for the cuddles...I did not know that till recently. Funny man.
reply by the author on 25-Sep-2018
I answered this before dunno why coming up again. Bob different meaning down here to up over, ok.

This was such an enjoyable read, and packed full of information that was really interesting about people down under. I read the ingredients of that pie, lots of lots of soy. LOL so thank you for the enjoyable read and I hope you have a good night/ day, whatever it is down under. Oh by the way when I was reading your story I was actually finding myself talking like a Aussie! Fun read. : )
