It reminded me of a country song. I could see it being put to music. It also reminded me of one of my favorite poems, "Little Boy Blue," by Eugene Fields.

As the father of one son whom I love dearly. I used to fantasize about how my son would look. Would he be tall and strong? Would the girls thin him handsome? Would he look like me very much. Of much more importance, would he listen to my direction, would he make me proud or cause me disappointment? These are all questions that have been answered, my son is now 41 years old. He is a decent, and hard working man. Honest, caring and trustworthy. He fills my heart with joy, like the poem stated "There's a whole lot of man in that once little boy."

You certainly have a feel for the country music style. This rolls out well. I imagine that the 'missing' seventh line in the final verse would be taken up by an instrumental passage. Do you write your own music as well or are you simply a lyricist.?

Bmwhsd, this is simply a moving poem/song. Obviously lyrical , it moves the soul. Life comes full circle and yo have demonstrated this so aptly in this polished work. Impressive to say the least. Thank you for sharing... jlsavell

Excellent! I enjoyed the smooth rhyme and rhythm in each stanza and the repeating line brought each stanza together. The imagery was vivid and the words easy to follow and understand. The artwork you chose added character and beauty to the words. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to reading more of your writings. God bless :)

Okay, I like the poem as a whole. It has a good theme and a point to make. What I don't know is: Who hit who on a dark lonely highway?

That refers to a dog, or other animal, being hit and the father teaching his son about properly treating all animals not just the two legged kind. Appreciate your comments.

Hi Brett. This is a wonderful poem/song lyric that I enjoyed reading. As a matter of fact read it a few times. Very good rhyming and story with each vignette. Marilyn/BeasPeas

Wouldn't Johnny Cash have loved to do this one? It flows along smoothly and brings a message of strength, hope and a father's love. Very nice!

That is a wonderful song. How many boys in this world would grow up to become a whole lot of a man, if they were to hear from their father, There is a whole lot of man in my boy. Nicely done. Patricia
