G'day nancy. WOW! You are a star mate, that is one of the best pieces of poetry that I have ever read and believe me when I tell you that I have read a few in my life. Great work, cheers Fez

Interesting story of a stand-off in Texas that the Cavalry was called into quell. I bet there were quite a few of those in the Wild West at that time, with men taking the law into their own hands. Excellent rhyming and story line. Good luck in the contest. Faye

Wyoming Territory 1892. The Lincoln County War might have been in Texas or Kansas, Hmm, I'm not sure which. LOL Anyhow like you said quite a few disputes for power I suspect Thaks Faye. :<) Nancy

Another great historical poem and well written, I may add. It is so neat to learn while you read, as these poems are historical events that I may never read about elsewhere. Thanks for sharing, Nancy. Drew xx

I genuinely enjoyed this poem, Nancy. I liked that this poem told about a female who was hanged. Not that I like that idea, but wars are usually about men and great battles. This was a lesser battle, but the intensity of war and how it affected the people of Johnson country was no less that other battles that received a greater stature in history. It was a hard choice between your poem and Domino's Battle of Hastings, but in the end I went with yours.
Rose.

Thank you Rose! That just makes my day! I am enjoying doing these poems with the western theme and just happened to have that one ready when I saw Domino's Prompt! Hugs and smiles my friend! Nancy

You have a real knack for bringing things to life. The plethora of alliteration and some inner- line rhyme adds to the telling of this story. Thanks for sharing this bit of history and good luck in the contest.

Great story of the old West and a thrilling tale of a hanged woman and cattle thieves. Not many women got hanged in those days. You portrayed the event well and in good form. Enjoyed very much.

Interesting story, Nancy. First time I've heard anything about it and it seems strange to think counties would be at war lol. Good couplet rhyming and a good rhythm. I wasn't sure what a "poke" is but thought it may be a word from that era. Nice alliteration in roam the range and gory story. Good luck in the contest.
All the best,
Rodger

So, You are not a Western fan! LOL Living in Nevada and being subjected to western movies in my childhood and adult life I am a very big fan. Yes, poke is a purse, a pouch in which the men carried their valuables back then. Thanks for the review. Tough competition.LOL> Nancy

haha I used to watch a lot of westerns and my favorite was a cowgirl named Sally Starr. She hosted my cartoon show and hailed from Pennsylvania LOL. :)

Wasn't there a film made from this story also, Nancy? I seem to recall seeing one.

That aside, what a terrible miscalculation made by the big ranchers of Johnson County. Apparently all they'd wanted to do was alleviate their losses a bit by hiring these Regulators but things obviously got a bit out of hand.

A story in a poem well done.

Good luck with it. ~Dean

There were several Dean. Shane touched on it. He took sides,Hell's Gate and The Johnson County War. The Redhead from Wyoming, Maureen O'Hara became Cattle Cate. Rooster Cog burn was written up to have been hired by the Cattleman's Association in the Johnson County War.
There' more coming up in my poem today "The Regulator." About Tom Horn. Thanks for the review Dean. Nancy
