I grew up in what were called bad neighborhoods. I'm white, and while growing up, most of friends were black. The best friend in my life is black, and we share many of the same beliefs as you. It is always a shame when any young person, of any color or nationality, is killed. The real shame is that he didn't have a role model to instill hope and character. Booker T. Washington would have succeeded in any environment, and we all can too, with the right guidance and attitude. We all have so many similarities, and yet, most of our time is wasted on our few differences. Thanks for another fine commentary. :-)

When are people going to realize that White Supremacist have entered the police force an is practicing ethnic cleansing. And there is that Wall of Silence among even good police officers. Don't believe me? When was the last time an unarmed white man or white teenage boy was shot to death. Or an unarmed white woman was punched in the face by a male police officer. People need to wake up and stop blaming the victims. The Black community is not making this shit up!

Thank you very much.

Dillon Taylor, white 20 year old killed by black police officer in Utah, 8/11/14.
I am black, and I am not a victim.
I thank you for your thoughts and comments.

"Black Lives Matter" Of course black lives matter. Here, there everywhere, they matter. Certain people, and certain institutions though, think blacks are more fair game than others. Why? Because of history, that's why. Well done.

Very well written article, Lance. I do believe Mr. Jackson nailed that one. Gangs are rife in marginalized communities and it's because of bone-wrenching and long-lasting poverty and little hope for escape.
"A crazy person is like a courageous person. They'll take on anyone, but a coward knows who not to mess with, and seeks only easy safe targets." Great line and also smart.
That bar chart tells the story at a glance. Black homicides remarkably higher in the 15-34 age group. The media definitely needs some cluing in.
Great write.

This is a provocative essay that called the attention of this reader. I have watched this violence in the screen in the safety of my home, but still I feel for those wasted lives. Who knows, with the right environment we could have a scientist, a poet or a peace minister.

Wow, Lance. I'm not quite sure what to say...you've put forth a lot to think about, in my opinion. Don't get me wrong. Your commentary is easy to understand and very well presented. No doubt about that. And I can't say I disagree with anything you've brought up.
I guess I'm overawed by the statistics and the observations you've made. You're a remarkable writer and a very valuable contributor to this site! I'd give you a six, but already I've used them up.
Peace!

This is a hard hitting essay and needs to be read, by all races. What a waste of life when ones peers decide to gun down another person of his own race. In some cases the cops are bad, as there are bad apples in any profession, but in the main, I do not believe anyone needs to fear the police. Race relationships in our country are worse now than I have seen them in my 76 years.

One of the most thought provoking articles I have read in years. I live in the D.C. area and I am amazed (not surprised) at the violence reported daily in the papers and media outlets daily. Daily violence is reported in S.E. Washington and no one is surprised.
It's just another shooting or whatever....
Excellent presentation.....thanks for taking the time to care.

Hi lancellot, I am a Brit, but I read your essay with a lot if interest my friend, I have read other things on here where you have said in no uncertain terms that you are not happy with your American brothers lot! Your words make a lot of sense to me, I can't understand why you would think others would take offence, those statistics speak for them selves my friend, we have a saying over here that 'What can't speak, can't lie'. I look forward to your next post my friend.

I agree with everything you said, Lance. But why is it that the major media moguls like CNN, MSNBC and Fox news always bring to the forefront the race of a person killed when it involves a multi-racial crime? It always' goes down something like this...
"Unarmed black teen ginned down by white police officer in Chicgao's red light district. Details coming right up."
"What?" I always ask my wife when it happens. "You mean those cruel, inhumane bastards shot a kid with no arms? How could he even raise his hands to surrender if he had none?" You get the point, I'm sure. That's how ridiculous I feel it's gotten.
They do it because it brings in the ratings -- massively high ratings by all statistics -- yet rarely (if ever!) is race left out of the issue.
That too is just a heinous a crime as the murders themselves. Murder, death, and suicide by cop is big business in the news, and Americans eat it up like a Christmas goose.
To me, I think that's the biggest crime of all.
