"Surprise, surprise|" should I say that again? I thought of putting the 4 stars just to please you, with a load of advices, but resisted the temptation to be dishonest. I like the whole idea and forthrightness of your thoughts. Yes, reviewers are mostly encouraging than denigrating. It makes sense. Although in due course, you tend to get bored with so much of useless adulation. Coffee time!

This recounts the experience of many members of the site.
Yes, the advent of the word processor and reading from screen instead of page has changed some of the rules. Yes, no site is perfect. Yes, this is a fine essay.

For the most part, Mikey, this is good advice. I have a bit of a problem with the total, by rote banishment of 'very' and 'really'.
Absolute rules make reviewers absolute idiots.
Really and very have their places.
So the next time I get gigged by a reviewer quoting your absolute rule, I'll know who's really to blame.
How many times have you been gigged by a reviewer who insisted all adverbs are verbal farts and need to be eradicated?
People love absolute rules--no thinking required.
Best of luck.
Peace, Lee

This meets the contest requirements beautifully. This is a well done narrative on writing which comes across well in the first person telling of your own experiences. I wish you all the best in the voting and thank you so much for sharing this with me.

Superbly done! YOu have learned well, and it's to your credit that you were able to push your ego aside in order to learn what you needed to know. Bravo! :)

Excellent self-help essay for this contest. The title is perfect for the "Post it" messages contained within. When I saw this formatting, 'm,' I thought I was in for only a "fun" read. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much helpful information was offered, Making the "post-it" collection this morning. Thanks for the help.

This is an excellent essay. It is packed with practical and truthful information. It is so true, there is no reason that anyone that wants to improve their writing cannot do so right here. Some of the reviewers here would cost a fortune in the real world. Excellent.

What a wonderful essay this is, author. You have described every member on FanStory, even though some won't recognize themselves in your words. I still remember the writer who knocked my writing down with kindness and knowledge. He is the one reason why I continued here. He gave my story two stars ... and I deserved a one. But he made me see all my mistakes, and like you, I wrote them all down so I could check each story. I still make mistakes, and I'm still learning how to write, but because this reviewer saw something in my writing worth his time to describe in detail why my story was not good, I'm still here. I'm a better writer now, and I wish I had the time to give detailed reviews to every story. You never know if your review will be the one to give the writer enough encouragement to see beyond the critique and feel that desire to continue to improve with each writing.
Best wishes in the contest. I loved your essay ... Really!
Smiles,
Indy :-)

Some excellent advice, author 'M', and my guess the woman who dropped a three star rating on you that changed the perceptions you had about how great your writing was and was subsequently the critical turning point for you would be rama devi. Who else goes into such lengthy detail? If she gives you a less than average rating, she also gives you reasons why, as well as suggestions on how to improve it.
I've been here since March of 2013, and have seen lots of wannabe writers some and go. I've even thought about going myself recently, and never looking back. FanStory and the community here are a very caring group of individuals -- for the most part -- who like us share a passion and love for the written word.
What more could we ask for?

Rama Devi is one of the most helpful reviewers here, that is a fact. She has improved my poetry and my approach to poetry by leaps and bounds. But, it was Spiritual Echo that kicked my butt and made a writer out of me. She pulled no punches and wasn't putting up with any "cuteness". Hahaha. Great input Dean. It occurs to all of us to go I think. But, there are certain people here that make it worth while. Hell, the real world has an even higher percentage of idiots!!! I guess I do use the same font and all that!!! Of course, it is the amazing brilliance of the thought process itself that probably gives me away....... :))

Yep, it does give you away...that amazing brilliance, I mean, Mikey, LOL...
Don't worry, people pick up on my anonymous blind entries too, regardless of the fonts or formatting I use. Many have a unique style, a certain way the story carries itself, and that comes through very prominently in their writing.
Spiritual Echo, huh?
Imagine that!...:}
