Well thought out and presented arguments. You've removed the emotion from the equation, and brought the problem down to personally comprehensible size. Good job. :) nancy

Excellent original use of the prompt sentence. I doubt anyone thought of this. It works smoothly too as I didn't know it was a contest entry until I read it at the very end. Great discussion here that presents, objectively, a choice in points of view and a challenge to research the facts before jumping on a bandwagon. That is good advice for either side. Well done. mikey

A very good story, Lancellot, well told with wit and intelligence.

Your characters, Dr. Strauss and the students are realistic, the dialogue fit the characters.

But not to worry, perhaps everyone will sit by the fireplace [Paragraph spacing error.]

Again, good job!

Thanks for the pleasure of reading your commentary. I'm sure that we all have different answers and opinions on what the right or wrong answer is on the best idea for handling this situation. And, there will be bits and pieces of truth in all extremes. I don't profess to have the answer, but I do know that your story that prompts everyone to use their heads is likely one of the best methods for a fix. Great job. :-)

Lancellot - the writer (you) is obviously the teacher in this writer and MIGHTY superb teacher at that! I can't express that even though this is not a "real story" the way in which it is told was teachable, at least to me. I didn't even now where I stood on this subject matter. I appauld you for this masterpiece. Great story and excellent lesson. This is truly vote worthy!

I LIKE THE WAYS SERIOUS ISSUES ARE DISCUSSED HERE IN A CLASSROOM FORMAT. I FEEL A CERTAIN DISCONNECT THOUGH BETWEEN THE OPENING STATEMENT AND THE STORY BUT IT IS A STORY THAT GETS ONE THINKING ABOUT SERIOUS MATTERS FROM DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS. GOOD JOB.

Your story mirrors my thoughts, I love your logic, examples, and the patience, level headedness, your instructor brings to the issue. You're right, but desperate people care less for logic, or concern of others more deserving. They believe in magic, the magic of hard, and cheap labor. They mostly think by hard work, the sacrifice, they redeem their error, but again their logic errors. It splits my heart, and this problem should have been nipped in the bud many moons ago, but was ignored, even applauded, by greedy capitalistic people. We need reform alright, a tough metering of existing laws would do for starters. Kenny

Mr. Strauss seemed to me to be a very wise and astute teacher. Putting Jake Wilkins, most likely a jock, in his rightful place was a good move on his part, right out of the gate. If a teacher has no respect nor control of his or her classroom, then nothing will be learned, and chaos will reign supreme.

He also made some pertinent and interesting points concerning immigration. Immigration is nothing new. It has been around since the dawn of time. But some of the unique issues we face in the United States, such as lackadaisical politicians all clamoring for the Latino vote come the next election, hampers many of those whose efforts are truly meant for the best of all.

An excellent story/political narrative, Lance. Very well done.~Dean

It has been a while since i was exposed to a lecture in a fiction piece. It used to be standard practice. the Magic Mountain be Thomas Mann is a typical example. You did well here in that old tradition. so there in intelligence on this site, all evidence to the contrary.
