I could not agree more with this than if I had written it myself, Dawn. I do make a living, and a decent one at that, by shopping my work to ezines, magazines, etc, and have two well-known publishing houses on the hook for an anthology with an interesting marketing ploy, one never done before. But, I also don't go around talking about it. It is no one's business but my own.
To be condescending and downright rude to people has never occurred to me, unless they are rude to me first. Then, it is "game on", girlfriend! I don't do it to others, and I don't expect it to be done to me. If you're a person who doesn't like animations, sound FX and artwork in your stories and poetry when you read, then spare me your "THIS AIN'T MTV" comments, and take your pompous ass right on past my postings. Feel free to pass on the 1.24 in member dollars I used to promote it, too.
We're supposed to be here to help support and encourage one another, not tear each other down. While they may have their "opinions" (and we all know what they say about opinions, don't we?), and they're certainly free to voice them, they should not get all pissy if we choose to thank them, but ignore their advice, just the same.
Just an example of the idiocy that goes on here specifically, a voter said in one of their comments when voting on Christopher Sheldon's fine poem in the Poem of the Month Contest; and I quote -- "The best poem and poet by far. Even though we know who is gonna win, and it's not gonna be for a matter of talent x". Now, I ask you. Was that little nasty jab truly necessary?
I think this really highlights exactly what you are talking about.

Dean, you've made my day, and I do NOT mean the six-star rating, although I would never want to dishonor the fact that you believe this essay worthy of it - I admire your work far too much! It's a HUGE deal to me, and I'm truly honored by it.
But I am even more honored by the fact that you support me and this work. I've had it up to my eyeteeth with arrogant as%$holes who intimidate, discourage and basically BULLY other writers. Yesterday was the proverbial straw for me - imagine someone having the audacity to call someone a "dog", directly or indirectly?
Thank you SO much for your loyal support, my friend - it means a lot to me, Dean.

I'm behind you one hundred percent on this one, Dawn. I've got a feeling that someone, a relatively new member here, who goes by the name of Pyrrho was involved (yes, I DIDreveal his name, and am not afraid to show it!), whom I have blocked. I hope more decide to follow my suit. He is the only one of two on this entire site to whom I've done so. However, I respect the other as a person, so I don't choose to reveal their name. I can't be certain of that it was Pyrrho, however. Just call it...an educated hunch.
-
Oh dear, Dean, that incident and the people involved will remain nameless - it was just the capper - I've seen it over and over again - been the victim myself (though ONLY online). For the first time, I actually released this posting from here TO the net because it is a topic that NEEDS to be addressed all over it!!!
Don't give names - we supportive writers NEED each other, and I would be very unhappy if you were to be banned. I'll send you my email address by PM.
-
I'm not directly accusing him, Dawn, so what are they going to ban me for? I'm only saying that, based on my personal dealings with this cretin, I "suspect" he had something to do with it. Futhermore, my name gets bantered about all of the time in a negative light, but I don't see anyone trying to ban those who do so.

This is a good reminder to reviewers who get too aggressive with their opinions.
I haven't had issues with the type you described but have had a few insulting reviews, accompanied with reduced star awards that when I looked into their site, discovered they themselves were not accomplished, had little knowledge, and very little or none of their own work posted.
I found that odd. Wondered what gave them the idea they were experts? One was even passing out bad reviews and 3 stars if the poem or story didn't grab him enough to read it in the first place.
Every basket of apples have a certain amount of rotten ones I guess

Comment from Sandra Stoner-Mitchell
I had to give this a 6, Dawn, I totally agree with you. I had an awful one from a complete newby, the language really was nasty. It was from a review I did on his poem, unfortunately the 5 stars I clicked on went to a 3, I normally check but didn't this time. The reply...well, he went into my profile and called me frizzled up prune! That my writing was rubbish...it went on and on. I did tell him what happened, but because he was capable of saying all those things, I decided I didn't want to read his or him read mine. These people are coming on here a lot now. How I wish they were all as sweet as Pam, why do the best die young? Great read, Dawn, keep them coming. xsx Sandra

Ha! What an idiot. I hope you reported him. Yes, Sandra, I miss her too.
Thank you doesn't express just how grateful I am for this supportive review, my friend - I appreciate you so much!

I agree with you 100 percent but wonder if the snobs are even aware that they are snobs? I do hope some read this and see themselves in your words. There is no place for rudeness or condescension when commenting on another word. Excellent work with this one. Thanks so much for posting this, it is long overdo.

Bless your heart, Sasha - I was so outraged, I couldn't keep my mouth shut. It was the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back". I've seen it too many times, and experienced it (but ONLY online.)
I've even allowed this content to go out over the net from here - (the first time I've done that).
Thank you so much for your supportive and generous review!

This is great Dawn and so true good for you for venting. I loved the directness and it was blunt. It was frank and true. It was so well done. Maybe this is why some go and never return LOL! happy summer! Congrats on six! beth fairy77.

Beth, I can't thank you enough! I've had it up to my eyeteeth with pompous, arrogant jerks who haven't got the decency to keep their opinions to themselves when they don't like something. I don't mind if someone wants to be critical and they can back it up, but how dare someone get personally insulting?
This was the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" - I've seen it over and over, been subjected to it myself (on these online sites ONLY, mind you) and I felt it was time to voice my opinion.
I'm THRILLED AND HONORED you liked it! Thank you, my friend. :)

I can't believe a writer would be that rude to another writer. It's horrible. Even if you don't like what somebody wrote you can find something good to say or don't say anything. Oh my!! What is the world coming too.

Yup, I was furious on her behalf. It's not the first, either - wordsmiths are really good at manipulating the written word (obviously - or they'd better be - LOL). Therefore, they can also be talented at hiding insults inside a supposed straightforward review.
Thanks, Barbara. Again I say, I appreciate you so much - this is an example of the way things are supposed to work.
