Is it really that simple?

Damn. Every time I think I write something dynamic and awe-inspiring, you come along and raise the bar. I love how most of your short stories get us to really think about an issue and this one was no different.
You take an honest look at a hard truth. Yes, if you only ever been raped by the purple man and a purple man and green man walk in, I would totally watch the purple man.
I don't think it's racism, just being cautious. People tend to learn what kind of people to avoid due to some trauma or incident in their past. I stayed away from big kids with anger issues in school and as a general point, I avoid them now too.
Excellently written, my friend and again, I love that you get us to work our minds.
Great job,
-T.J.

Yes, it is racial profiling but its based on fear, so it Sam justified? If Sam was working in a poor white neighborhood and was robbed by poor white teenagers would he follow every white person young or old that walked in? It based on experiences and circumstances. Many Americans like to believe racism doesn't exist and are shock when it is pointed out. Then they said brown, yellow, black people always said everything is about race. It is when you are followed or the cops ask to see ID because you fit the description. Yet, Sam's point of view is just as valuable. It's a touch subject which requires talk( not yelling) to find some kind of solution or common ground. As always your writing is lyrical, professional and moving. I hope to reach your heights with my own work. A mind pumping read.

Thank you very much. You are too kind. I am still learning, and the more I review and read on the site, the more I see what I miss. You should read some of first posting, Oh God they were bad.

Right on! My god it is that simple, not even hard.

Good choice of scene, especially Chicago. I liked you chose two men that were not white to show that racism isn't about color it's about perception tainted with fear.

Thank you
G

This is an excellent story about subtle racism. In my experience there are decent people who are racist without realizing it. What was different, and so good about this one is the way it was resolved. The tension was building up, and could have had a tragic ending, but instead was resolved in a logical way, with both sides accepting reason. The outcome was truly satisfying without being predictable.

I like the positive message of this piece. A great building of tension with a satisfying outcome. Wish real life could go that well. Good job! :) Bev

A very interesting story with a wonderful moral at the end. One that we all could learn to help us get along with each other, regardless of color, etc. Thanks for sharing.

I always appreciate your dealing with tough issues. You do not dance around the truth. I wish we could have more honest discussions like your two characters. I believe it is labeled, not labelled.

In this life there is no cut and dried solution to such complicated and sensitive problems. In the end, in your story, common sense prevailed, one could see both sides of the argument and it was resolved amicably. I wish more people shared your point of view. A well written effective story, which I hope, will have the effect of highlighting this issue. Faye

I really enjoyed reading this piece. I am often taken back by young teens willing to be flipped about race. These are such dangerous times and they are usually not very good representative's of what those before them went through. This color line divide with people of color being at the bottom continues to rear its dirty head. And as adults we can protect them but so much. I loved how you resolved the conflict. I also liked how you tastefully described each character.. I was pleased that you used different ethnicity's other than just black and white. Thank you for sharing such a powerful piece.

Once again, lancellot, you pen a thought-provoking write, and one that begs to be read, in my opinion. There are many shades of grey to be considered in issues so important, and unfortunately, we're often either too lazy or too unconcerned; it's easier to just 'label' something or someone - box it up so it fits our concept rather than try to keep an open mind.

This is a wonderful example you've given with this story. Kudos on raising awareness!
