The true German flag was (no where) among them [nowhere] ??
Your story reminded me of the Milgram experiment. It was a series of social psychology experiments in the 60s conducted by Yale University where psychologist Stanley Milgram, who intended to measure the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience followed orders. It's a horrible truth about some people who have no problem following the command of crazy psychopaths like Hitler. Poor Marguerite.
Excellent flash fiction based on history.

thank you so much, Gypsy. It is crazy how the mob mentality grips some people. I really appreciate this fine review and the nice rating. Gretchen

This story was chilling and real. I could imagine Marguerite's anguish as she waved the flag, cheering for Hitler, the anti-Christ. You captured the fear and loathing in a few short sentences. The mob mentality and the genuine threat to people who were not supportive made me cringe. Excellent. gayla

I'm sure it was that way for some. But some were misled into thinking that Hitler was going to bring a kind of morality that they believed to be more "Christian" even though he was a pagan and idolized old German mythology. It's not too far from the manipulation of Putin and his mentor who believes that the Slavic people and the Central Asians are the superior race. It's too bad that history is repeating itself! Scary stuff!

It is scary. History constantly reinvents itself and just changes to people. Thanks so much for this. Gretchen

Marguerite did what was necessary to have her life saved. Many felt the way Marguerite felt and despised Hitler, but lived to whisper their story to like-minded Germans.

Yes. He was a savior to some and a demon to others. He pushed pride of the motherland but it was hatred underneath. Thank you so much. Gretchen
Comment from Dolly'sPoems
Many of the German people felt this way but could not voice their opinion at the time because of the threat of death. It was madness and it proved to be devastating for so many ethnic and religious groups. The cleansing of Germany that spread to other countries. Hitler' s biggest mistake was to attack Russia. As with all dictators, his ego grew bigger with his supporters egging him on. Such a tragic period in European history Gretchen. A heartfelt story.
A chilling line here:
(Howl with the wolves, Marguerite, or we will surely be slaughtered with the lambs," he whispered).
Everyone is one word.
Another well written story Gretchen, love Dolly x x x

Thank you, Dolly. To think that you could be executed if you didn't support your leader is terrifying. But it happens to this day, all over the world. Gretchen

This is so true. There were some who hated what they saw Hitler doing, but there were many who were delighted to point them out in the crowd. I keep hoping we don't have assemblies like this in our country in the near future.

I see riots not festivals. But I pray it doesn't happen. Both sides are bitterly divided. Thank you so much for this nice review. Gretchen

It was the allies that drove Germany to vote the likes of Adolph Hitler in by the draconian decisions the allies made as punishment to make Germany pay for losing WW1 that put the likes of him in power, of course he blamed the Jews for all the ills of the war. And everything else for that matter. Beautifully written Gretchen, blessings Roy

He was a very sick minded man. Sadly, they seem to be a dime a dozen now. Thank you for this. Gretchen

I'm sorry I missed this the first time around. So many Germans refused their allegiance to Hitler and lost their lives. Many were brainwashed and blindly followed. We're having that problem in the US right now.

It's hard for me to imagine a mad monster rising to such overwhelming power. But hard times make people desperate for change. Adolf Hitler promised to make Germany great again. Huh, seems like I've heard that propaganda before, or should I say since. Thanks for sharing.

Pride is a tricky emotion. A little is fine, but a lot is lunacy. Thank you for this. Gretchen

I hope with all my heart America is never where this people were back then. I until recently I never even considered that could be a possibility but now, I'm not so sure. Excellent writing.

We are definitely a divided nation. If only people would communicate. Crazy times, once again. Gretchen
