To be around during that time would have been extremely interesting, but it sounds like a lot of the adults had problems with abusing kids. The hosing down you got at the camp would have never been tolerated here in the States.
When I was in the Marine Corps, part of the hazing we got was to strip down and stand at attention in the freezing cold weather during weapons training. So, it's definitely a means of punishment that can cause trauma to people, especially kids.

I do wonder if some of the powers in charge were ex-Army. We were singing old army songs like the "Quartermaster's Store" and so on at the camp.

Sour milk? At school? Gross! But the lamb you had...Lamb is amazing. My husbands sister raises sheep and lambs and every year we get to buy a little bit from her at a discounted price. I love that time of year.
On a funny (?) side, this particular girl I am speaking of told me fairly recently that at one time she committed some misdemeanour (in his estimation, anyhow). She or someone else organised some pillows to be placed inside the classroom piano. So when "Derringer" went to play it, of course, it would not work. I don't know if he ever found out who did it. (This made me laugh)
Your fitness camp you went to for ten days, I don't know what happened there but it doesn't sound good.
The particular incident I am thinking was some kind of abuse was the day a group of us boys were made to STRIP; in the outdoors! Then we were herded into the bathroom/toilet area starkers and hosed off with cold water. I can't remember if the showers had hot and cold water either. Maybe they thought our cleanliness left something to be desired, but I did feel what they did to us that day, might today be considered child abuse. (If this happened today some people would be fired) You say they don't remember but honestly when something traumatizing happens we tend to forget about it. We block it out to protect ourselves. Just because they don't remember doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Good chapter my friend, sounds like fun at nana, and granddads. Especially the sailing. Sounds like the school was pretty strict, especially when it done the hosing down of the boys. Good job, thanks for sharing.

I like the story about the girl putting pillows in the piano. The camp doesn't sound like a fun place, especially being hosed down with cold water outside.

yeah well I have been pleased to learn the place still existed after my time there and others did not have the same bad experience as I did. People have been denying the place actually was real some times. Thanks for the great review.
-
Glad not all had a bad experience there.
-
Yeah me too a bit surprising really. The shower business was the only unpleasantness it was basically good.

A very well-written story about your first years of school. I think we were all a little confused and felt out of place especially the first few weeks in grade one. Until we made friends and learned the routine, then we were all settled to tackle about anything that came our way

Hi Sandra thanks for your review. Yeah it was confusing as I think I said I now look back and I reckon the problems you are gonna read about, if I have not said already about my Dad leaving Mum probably weighed on us long before he finally left when I was 8. Plus changing school in 1958 I think. Thanks

I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and the explanation of what they were,.
Loved the days at school and reminded me of mine that seem so far away now.

I thoroughy enjoyed your depiction of your school days. I went to school in the UK in the year before you.......1955. I understand the milk problem but ours was usually frozen and equally difficult to drink with gloved hands. I trained as a teacher and taught in london for many years. I live in Australia now and have been a primary teacher here for over 20 years. The 'marching' always intrigued me. Your description of the cane is very upsetting indeed and I'm so glad it is banned. I have never laid a finger on a child. A great piece of writing. Susan

Hi Sue welcome to Aussieland. At least I don't have to explain my British English to you. The Yanks, Rebels, Rednecks and Coonasses give me such a hard time. Thanks for the lovely review will try and find you and reciprocate. Go back a couple of chapter with rewards still running I think. I added an Introduction to this pretty ancient book...getting ready for publishing...sorry no reward on the Intro left.

Thanks, Meia, appreciate you coming by. pretty sure we have met before. If you have not gone back there are a couple more chapters with rewards on still that I updated and the new Introduction chapter at the beginning rewardless, sorry. Have been through these a couple of times with Grammarly glad someone warned me Grammarly is no good on Comma and I found out still does not agree on British English spelling of some words. Even though I set it for British English. Cheers.

So interesting to read about growing up in Australia. Such different experiences from growing up in the States. But one thing was the same. My first school was ancient when I first attended back in 1952. The school wasn't demolished but burned to the ground about eight years later. Arson was suspected!
You have a wonderful, conversational style of writing. So enjoyable!

Thanks Sixty70 pretty sure you have been through before on earlier chapters.. Trying to reciprocate and pick up some more member dollars to get these old chapters reviewed after much editing and upgrading. Keen to go to Self -Publishing in the not too distant future.
-
I have read a couple of your previous chapters. Good luck with self-publishing!
-
Never done it before a few stores here are offering it so I might try with one of my smaller books for a start. I have poems and songs and other just essays in my portfolio if interested. Cheers and thanks again.
-
I'll take a look. Nice to meet you. My real name is Sipora - Zip to my friends.

Sankey,
My, my! What a memory you have! Although some of these things were a bit scattered about for me, I think I followed them well enough to figure it all out. *smile* I enjoyed! Thanks for the audio, too!

Thanks, Robyn Corum Not sure we have met before. Will check out your stuff. This is another go after a couple of Grammarly edits (can't trust Grammarly with comma's- thanks to Jackie Franklin, or even programme and realize English spelling even when you have set Grammarly to British English spelling! Grrr. If you care to look back there are still rewards on some earlier chapters and a new chapter was added for an Introduction if you have not been there before ...sorry the reward has run out on that one.
