An interesting new format and i prefer Helical Harmony (H-H format).
To spank or not to spank and should capital punishment be banned.
These are the questions for the parents to answer - assuming that they are not psychologically imbalance in any way.
The law should be quite clear about punishment meeted out to children and they do need to be disciplined.
I will go for spanking any time and let them feel the pain of wrong doing before that little 'crime' becomes a serious murder crime.
Great write and well penned.
Cheerio, Ritchie. :))

Thank you Ritchie. You have a very clear perspective, as usual.

I would say bring back the cane or the ruler, it does work very well.
Here in Asia, it is an accepted form of practice, capital punishment is not considered child abuse UNLESS we overdo it, smiles. But I think slapping is not good though.

Before I read your notes I was going to be blown away with your complex structure and actually, I still am...Your words hit the nail on the head and the rhyme scheme and theme along with the 8 syllable rhythm is quite amazing.

Reflectolet sound good
you have put this poem together so well with the rhyme and the eight syllable count in the first verse
the monorhyme works well for the poem
you have all the words at beginning and end in appropriate places
your pom takes your reader though with strong words and images of discipline and how it has come to a flaw in society where children basically have free reign
love this poem
Cheers sc

Thank you luff Linda. Yes, there is a difference between a swat on the butt and abuse.

This is a nice poem, written with four quatrains and an ending couplet, with good rhythm and rhyming throughout the poem, that opines about the subject of disciplining children.

Hi, Treischel,
This is an excellent poem as always a perfectly crafted complicated form. I do not like to comment on a person's message because everyone has the right to say what they wish but I feel a need to comment on this one. So forgive me.

Are we better off? A lot of children are. Is Sparing the rod the cause for the apparent breakdown in the family and the increase in youth violence. I would say look for other causes for the correlation. A mono-causal reason is not likely given the complicated nature of society.
Studies show that pain is a poor education method. The old adage about flies and honey applies. Aggression even the relatively mild aggression of a spanking results in aggressive behavior of the child even if it is only a fantasy of getting even. It is permission by the parent for the child to get even and apply aggressive means to obtain what he wants. The parent that is aggressive is certainly a poor role model. Of course I do not believe that a literal interpretation of the Old Testament is useful in today's society.
I am a product of the same cultural milieu that you are.
I was spanked and spanked my boys. Then they became teenagers and that did not work any more. I turned out all right what is the fuss all about?
Sorry to get on my soap box and preach.

Thank you Preston, I agree with you there are multiple causes. I think another is the elimination of the military draft requiring everyone over 18 to perform service to our country, unless meeting an exemption criteria. Thereby removing 18-22 year olds and getting them under the control of a drill sergeant, or they go to college. Other causes too. But these are two.

No, we are certainly not better off.

Great piece of poetry - another new invention - hurrah! I would call it a Tomgalo .. :)

Wonderful scripture verses you've quoted in your author notes - pity that the New Covenant seems to conveniently dispense with the Old for some folks - well, World, you are now reaping the rewards of your foolishness - and I'm not referring to global warming!

Well said, sir!

Thank you Sonali, but I would only give credit to Gungalo. It's her creation.

Where to begin, perhaps the end would be better than the beginning. I was beaten black and blue as a child by dad-see the poem "Father's Punishment." But that was excessive so there must be balance. I look at myself as I am advancing in age with my great respect for the law. Would I have been any different if I had not been hit as a child? I think that sad experience made me tough but kind with great abhorrence to any form of violence. .

Thank you rod, for sharing. I too was Bergen black and blue frequently by my dad. Although, he got carried away, I still think there is a place for soaking. Sometimes, that's all that gets through.

Excellent presentation of the new poetry style,, and I have to say,, because parents cannot discipline the children of today are far from favoured,,, such disrespect,, selfishness,,, egotistical ,,, hateful natures,,, boy it stand and see these children. And shake my head. What has the world done,, and we are leaving this world to these children,, I only pray,, those children brought up with morals,,, and ethics and the proper teachings can lead the way,,, but I fear this is not so,, great write I got the cord and stood in the corner and grounded ,, and it never hurt me maybe my pride,, but that pride was a kid thing,,, this is a good message,, we need to take control of our children they are running amok blessings sueellen

"Spare the rod & spoil the child.
I guess that's why I wasn't spoiled then.
This is certainly a controversial bone of contention these days.
Very reflective and thoughtful and a difficult subject to find a balance on.
I take notice of the last two lines and I,too, wonder are we better off as a society. I don't really think we are.
