I like how you 'stood up for' Galileo...not many did at that time when he needed support. Your words told a good story, and the pic was great.

Brava! How did they not see, indeed! I like it, but considering its sentiments - and mine - it wasn't a hard sell. Two suggestions, though: 1) his surname should be corrected to Galilei; and 2) "solve the solution" sounds a bit awkward. One of the two "s" words could be changed, I think, without injury to the integrity of the poem. I've not seen many poems that deal with historical injustice, but I, for one, would welcome them. Anymore in the offing?

I took your advice on the word solve and changed it to resolve, what do you think? The wrong spelling was a slip of the finger. Thanks for your positive observations, I may work on some more historical Injustices. Mary

I think solve and resolve overlap considerable. In some minds, they may even be consdiered as having the same meaning. My thoughts were along the lines of find the solution or solve the problem, but, of course, its your poem.

thanks again for replying, I have changed resolve to reach. I do appreciate your input in the poem. Mary

It sounds smoother to my ear. I've been thinking very hard about this, and, to te best of my recollection, the only other "historical injustice" poem that I can remember encountering was about Sacco and Vanzetti, and that was in Italian. You just may have an entire genre to yourself! -- Jimu

have you heard of Rosinland Franklin poor Rosinland is never mentioned when DNA is talked about, but only for her, Francis Crick and James Watson would not have clinched it.
reply by theBronxExpress on 30-Aug-2013
I have not heard of Rosalind Franklin, and have only cursory knowledge of Crick and Watson. Is a poem imminent?

Ah, Ye~s~s~s~s, the order set forth by the Catholic Church...The church and the bible shackled the minds of men for thousands of years, and held back the advance of science. It was this sort of thing that was used as evidence against Galileo, who argued for the theory of Copernicus, that the earth is not immovable, but rotates around the sun. It was for teaching this that he was called to Rome in 1633, and tried for the crime of heresy. The aged Galileo, in his 70's, was taken down into the dungeons of the church and shown the instruments of torture that were going to be used on him if he did not recant. Fearing the torture, and fearing that he might share the fate of Giordano Bruno, whom the church burned at the stake a generation earlier for the same crime, Galileo recanted the truth. He was confined to his home under house arrest, neither allowed to leave or to receive visitors, for the last seven years of his life.

I love the historicity of this . I love the rhyme but not the reason.........bigotry geocentricity......ignorance that kills
Well done I like your poem...I don't think I ever knew Galileo was a Gallili...

I love your poem Madam! Just as I love Galileo. I teach physics in our school and I always mention about him and his struggles. But of course, with emphasis that his being house arrest did not keep him from learning and doing things for mankind. I'll share your poem to my students.

"A Martyr for Science" is truly an original, creative poem.
It's unfortunate that geniuses are rarely appreciated in their own times.

jackarrie--What a novel idea and gratuitous as well: scribe
has used her personal love of science and history to render
a poetic duality write: this at the same time praises
Galileo and criticizes Aristole. A factual succinct piece.
Thanks for the knowledge. teafor2

You rhyming couplets were done to perfection. The rhythm was done so well that it made me easier to read your poem. The usage and imagery was astounding and it made me see visions into the past that I would never have thought before. Such a tragedy of justice that Galileo was mistreated for his insanity, so to speak, but his recognizing some truth against what they thought was the truth of the church. Thank you so much for sharing this enlightenment poem. You have a good one in God bless.

Such a unique topic to write on - yet one I have always found quite fascinating. I think the construction and flow of the piece is beautiful and quite masterful considering the words you chose to marry in rhyme. Thank you so much for sharing this with me.

Thank you for a piece of poetry that follows poetic form and still tells a story. Even some today are afraid the learn. And do not realize that although they refuse to change, changes come all around them.
