I can see that you put much thought into this 5/7/5 and the role of women when Jesus was crucified. Jesus told the deciple to behold his mother, and his mother to behold her son. For me that shows that Jesus cared about the relationship between mother and son and vice-versa. You make some excellent points. Rose.

It's interesting that there are a number of entries that refer to women in the Bible. How ironic that the majority of churchgoers seem to be women, but that disproportionately few women hold office in the religious hierarchy.

I admire the thoroughness of your preparation and the power of your succinct write.

I am Episcopalian. but I have visited a number of catholic churches especially in Latin America. Great prominence is given to the figure of the Virgin Mary. And of course the rosary is part of the veneration of the Mother of Christ. Although not part of the Trinity, she is a central figure in catholic worship.

Thank you so much juliajames. Mothers, and mother earth ,have been venerated throughout history. Many pagan religions had female/ females to worship. I think Mary was the Catholic Churches attempt to corral that spiritual energy. They succeeded very well, don't you think?

Oh yes, I think so. Syncretism is a fascinating subject. I lived in Brazil for almost ten years and candomble venerates a mix of Yoruba gods and catholic saints.

    peace and blessings, julia

This acknowledgement of women is appropriate. The first bearers of the gospel were women! Strange that some ignore Christ's example, preferring Paul, and restrain woman's equal role "God is no respecter of person's.

It's interesting we both chose the role of women in Scripture as a theme on which to meditate. It always surprises me the arguments put forth against women priests. After all, they were the first witnesses to the Resurrection. You portray women in the New Testament well. It has always surprised me the women in The Gospel of St. Luke, chapter 8, verse 3, are not mentioned again. Excellent work.

Thank you Alvin. Quite a coincidence. Yes women we definitely excluded. I don't think that was Jesus opinion.

This is marvelous! Your 5-7-5 is almost senryu-like with its satire and irony. And I so appreciate all of the quotes showing the significance of women in Christ's life, which have been minimized for sure - even to not allow women to be priests in contemporary society. I loved this exercise and you did a superb job! Beat of luck in the contest. Hugs, Sue

Wow, thanks for those cool author notes. Women most certainly were important and held positions in ministry. I like how you brought this out in the poem. Great job. ~Yona

Thank you Yona. Your poem about the Agony in the Garden encouraged me to try. I'm glad I did. Thank you for the prod.

WOW! This is awesome that you have highlighted the role of the women in His life. The first century believing community met in the home of several women...making them both the hostess and the leaders of "house churches". It is awesome to read all these great contest entries and see the things that the Holy Spirit speaks into each of our souls about the verses we have chosen.

Thanks for sharing this and best wishes with the contest entry!
Blessings!

I would give you a 6 for this one, had I been allowed. Your authors notes are excellent and do justice to the injustice of woman's role in religion. Why women are looked upon the way they are in all religions, is beyond me. Some religions are criminal in their treatment of women. I enjoyed your 5-7-5, Treischell, and your author notes, (they should be pinned up on every churches notice boards!) xsx Sandra

The crucifixion of Christ had to be one of the most poignant moment in the history of mankind.
The women are usually cast as the reason for the fall of men and is a gruesomely unfair point of view.
Surely Adam was with her when she bite that apple (another consideration of the story).
Adam had a choice but he chose otherwise. Who do we blame - the victim or the Temptress?
Good write and raised some good questions about why females are not allowed to be Cardinals?
Cheerio, Ritchie.

    Hi Tom,

Having review almost all of your poems, a small wag of the tail (as the Chinese puts it comically), Ritchie the uncanny can tell (boastful as usual, :-) ). Have a wonderful Sunday and let sleeping dogs lie. Never a good thing to raise the dead for sure.
    Cheers, Ritchie.

All these Christian stuff bores me so. Don't mean to be harsh but this was average and the end didn't make sense. The women look on? why? weren't they allowed to look at him? He actually said to his mother woman, behold your son! first he should address her as mother and secondly he shouldn't shout at her. I know her shouted at god and asked why he was put on earth suffer. I am gay and seeing what they Christians think and say about me does not make me a fan.

I respect you beliefs. I mean that. I am a bit surprised that you didn't get that I was criticizing the church for their position on women and pointing out that the gospels even confirm that Jesus gave them important roles. Besides Gays, women were excluded. That was the point I was making. Having said that, I understand where you are coming from.
