Gotta tell you, Sharyn, this is not only a sad poem but a story in itself... I visualized this personality even as I read... you've got a lot going on... using the chameleon as a stand-in was brilliant... your words and phrases are descriptively bleak, sad and defeatist. But the turn... oh yes, the turn... when the speaker is on his/her own and a feeling true to the speaker... FEAR... becomes personal property not an imitation of another...

Where's my flippin' tissues?

glad you kept your tissue box handy, Greg! I always struggle to be honest in my writing, because that's what gives it "guts" and makes it authentic, yes? :) Sharyn - that was sweet of you to review for 2 cents again!

Review you for 2 cents?... it ain't about those cents but rather the 'sense' to recognize how good you are! And I do have the tissue box near...

that's so sweet of you - really! I've just moved house and have set up my office again (well ... sort of ... if you include mountains of cardboard boxes of assorted files my "office") - so hopefully a little more time for thinking and writing again!

Hope to get to your story over a cup of Early Grey in the next hour - Jeff, my husband, has whizzed off to town and Kai, my son, has gone surfing ... home soon ... whew!

yes, it's what I call a PIA - pain in the ass - but an essential one as my dear hubbie is a disorganized ADD pack-rat!
reply by Gregory K Shipman on 21-Dec-2012
good thing about having a pack-rat is you never have to go out for that flea market experience!

The bad thing about a man defending a man is we already know there's no defense... but the brother's gotta be awesome if he's married to you! (hopefully that's a clever way to get both my neck outta the noose *smile*)

Well I TELL him that, of course, dear ... but do you think the blighter believes me?? nope!! Force is the ONLY option! :))))

Force?... I'd have fear written all over my face... with magic marker!

I, also, am a empath. Seems I absorb the emotions of those around me. But when it comes to my own, I am, almost, lost in the overwhelming or the emptiness.

Sharyn, this is very cleverly written evoking the extreme empathy one has for a very close friend, soul mate perhaps? I love the way you have moved the emotional colours from dark to light to bright red, and with such a climactic ending. Thanks for sharing.

Your poem says, you'll be what one wants you to be, which is a sad poem because there are folks who have no substance of their own and are in fact like the chameleon. I like the question and answer format you used because it works so well with the message and tone of the poem. The arwork is also awesome and frames the poem nicely!

Please take this the right way...every time I read your work it gets better and better. Your style is so refreshing. Whenever I read your words, I want to read more. So damn unique. Thanks my friend. Hope you're well. Obviously...I don't have a 6, or I'd give you a 7.

What an interesting piece. I found myself thinking of all the chameleons I know and of the times I have done this myself. The color of fear was great, I liked how you described it as ragged and blood red. very poignant and visual. I liked your picture, it blended and added to your piece. Nice job, as I have come to expect from you.

Your message is powerful and insightful. I enjoyed reading your poem. It flows well and it tells a complete story. It's a self awareness poem and I think you did a good job writing it. I also like your artwork choice.

I have seen many couples that are like the descriptions in your poem. One will only have the emotion that the other allows or demonstrates. They are so wrapped up in the life with the other, that they have no direction of their own. Good artwork choice. Enjoyed!

The emotions and thoughts of others truly affect many of us..Causing us to feel their emotions even stronger than they do. The chameleon was a perfect way to describe this. Our empathy can become our destruction if we are always adapting to others...forgetting ourselves, our dreams, our own emotions. The speaker captures the essence of this and allows us to see the dangers of becoming colorless..Void of our own self..Left without colors.

"no colors of my own
until I die ..."

Elegant write, cinamon
