Yeah, I know what you mean! But look at 'Hugh' on "River Cottage" UK TV - his parents must have thought he was a useless hippee-greenie and he has become SO enormously successful and rich!

You have so nailed it with this one, and I so wish I had a six to give. My daughter is a qualified opera singer. Cost hundreds of thousands to get her there. The day her dad died she was supposed to be the solo artist in the Messiah at the Usher Hall. She has never sung professionally since that day because she finally admitted to me that that day that she hated opera, and had only studied it to please my husband and I. Am I bothered? No. She is now happily married doing what she wants. We put too much pressure on our children, as your wonderful poem confirms!

Oh wow! The loss of that money must have hurt. It would hurt me! I am glad that you still love your daughter. What a sad tale. I almost feel that there is a story there ... perhaps another book? But perhaps some things are too close to home. I was not able to study the art I wanted, I had to change countries and then I had to find a job ASAP without a recognized school leavers certificate. Sometimes you just can't catch-up - but I am determined to die trying... Thanks for a good contest review. CG

It didn't seem like a lot of money at the time because it was spread over eight years and included her living expenses while she was at college. having said that, it was worth every penny because the week before he died, her dad was able to watch her sing as the soloist at the Edinburgh tattoo, which can be found on you tube under 'Elysia Leech'

So often parents fail to recognize that sometimes thin line between encouraging and forcing. I wonder how many well-meaning parents have stunted their children's emotional and professional growth! Good job

I can relate because I vividly remember when my daughter wanted to drop out of high-school sports, and I was heartbroken. She played longer than she wanted to because of me! I learned my lesson. Janice

This is just great. This Author, through his own disappointment, has posted excellent advise to parents. Don't rush into conclusions about the child's future.Don't always say no to a child's desires, examine them, if the child shows a talent, let them pursue that goal.

I applaud your wisdom as relayed with rhyme and rhythm. The last line "...let them breathe" was basically what the entire poem was saying and it summed it up. Good job.

Heart Dreams has wonderful rhyming symmetry and tells an endearing story which runs along nicely with a touch of musical rhythm. Really enjoyable and makes a valid point in the process.

Thank you for taking the time to read and review this poem. I can identify with you wanting to play the piano! I did too. You got a clarinet!...And I got a guitar. I gave up the guitar, because it was not what I yearned to play and I am sure you gave up the clarinet too.
