Hi, Beth, I really enjoyed reading about this trip that must have been a great adventure for you, having never been outside where you lived. The ending had me smile. He had a habit of divorcing it would appear Lol.
Just a minor thing:
The fact my cousin, Dave, was with us [which] made the long trip home by car more fun. 'which' is not needed.
I hope your hand get better soon. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla, I haven't been up to writing much new lately. Three of my fingers really annoy me when trying to type. The tips are very sensitive to touching and they tingle. I'm glad you liked my story about the train ride. My uncle didn't have much luck staying with just one woman.

No I can see that, hehe. Please be better soon.

I can imagine how great this was for you. You not only got to ride the train but a neighborhood full of kids had to be a dream come true for you. I would suggest 2 changes: I met (of) my cousins & Dave was with us (which) made . . .

This well-written recollection of your first long-distance train ride at age six is interesting to read, as I compare it with my own first such ride at age two in the mid-1940s. (I have loved trains ever since.) Your vivid details of what you saw, heard, smelled, and felt along the way easily enable the reader to imagine being there with you. Your experiences both after arrival and while driven back by your aunt with your favorite cousin along were also pleasant to read. Superb.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review and the six stars. I'm so glad you liked the story, and it triggered memories for you. I don't find the "which" you mentioned, so I guess I must have already removed it.

You are most welcome, Beth. Yes, I remember walking across the tracks in a rail yard to get to the train from New York City to Georgia. I see the change you made, so I have removed my comment about it. :)) -- Mike

Very nicely written.
It sounds like Mom should have spent her time encouraging her sister-in-law to run far and fast, as her brother wasn't much of a husband.
Glad you got to experience the train safely.
Best wishes.

Thank you. You're probably right about Mom's brother. He was quite a character. Back in those days, divorce was frowned on and Mom thought he was disgracing the family.

I enjoyed your reposting, Beth. You shared an excellent story
from your POV as a youngster. I liked all the things you included
about the sights and sounds along the way to Texas on the train.
Your details were awesome. Your descriptions once you entered
Texas were great too--esp of Galveston. I imagine everything was
so intriguing to a 6-year-old.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you Jan, i'm glad you liked my story. I thought Texas was the most wonderful place on earth. I got to go back at fifteen and had a wonderful time on that trip as well.

This is some mighty fine writing as is everything you write. You even had my old butt dragging, thinking about having to get up and catch the train. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I apologize again for whatever happened with the star system. You're a sixer in my eyes all the time!

Thank RIc. YOu sound like you liked it, but you only gave it three stars. Whata my doing wrong this week. I've earned one star form someone who didn't like my ebonics, Two stars frorm a friend who said she loved my poem and not three stars for you. I going to cry.

I'm so sorry, Beth. I can assure you I've never given you anything but fives or sixes, and I'd give you 10s if they'd let me. I don't know why this happens some times. I'd check with your other friend, as I'm sure she didn't mean to give you two stars either. Thanks for letting me know. I'll headed to fix it right now.

It's okay Ric. It is easy to do accidentally. I've done it myself. without meqning to.. It was the first time I got three strikes against in one week. mt stars aren't lined up right. lol

That was an interesting and a well-written story. I am sorry about your hands, Beth. Do you use Microsoft Word for your writing? If so, there is a dictation tool that you could use. It does take some practice and getting used to though. Thanks for sharing some of your older pieces. I have enjoyed reading them.

Thank you Faith, I fingers work but the tips are numb and I don't feel the keys with three of the fingers on my left hand. I can type for short periods until it starts to get to me. My daughter suggested I try the dictation tool. I'm not sure my brain works without my fingers on the keyboard. LOL I might give it a try.
    Thanks for the review.

Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories of this huge adventure when you were only six. Your memory is fantastic, describing all the passengers you met, and how they smelled, and how you felt. You were such an observant child. I'm sorry for your Aunt Aline but seems like your uncle was incorrigible.

This is a very good story that you have written for a childhood memory. For the contest. I do wish you the very best in the contest. You talking about the train ride cause major remember My first train ride. I was about nine years old and we took a train ride to Jefferson City Missouri from our closest hometown, which versus Sedalia Missouri. When we rode the train, I actually got sick on the train. It seems that the train went by places that the light poles are real close to the train, and the constant motion in my peripheral vision, made it very difficult for me and calls me to get sick.

Thank you for the review and comments. I remember the light poles being close to the track too. Actually now that your mention it, there was a period on that ride where I felt like I might throw up. Mom thought it might be because my sleep had been interrupted but it might have staring at the light poles.
