Beautifully written. It's similar to "Crazy Hunger" that I'm about to post but sooo much more heartfelt and thought provoking. (I'm glad this wasn't a contest against me lol) the sad part is that that father was doing what most parents would. He probably didn't know anything about horses anyway, and chances were the horse was okay. But in this particular situation, he was wrong, and his daughter is going to hate him for it. Nicely done number 1

I never hated my dad, A.R., but I did get angry at times if I thought he was unfair or wrong. Which was rare. He didn't mean any harm, no more than when he tried to teach me how to butcher a lamb. These things did stick with me tho and helped me be who I am. An animal lover to the end...I'm sincerely honored with a six from my fav. new FS member. What a delight. I will read your next post too, asap! :) Susan

Very well written little story! I'm heartbroken for the horse and the nine year old you in the back of that car...Some memories I would like to wish away...Poor old thing...

Hi Kelleigh! Thank you. This photo just brought it all back. I still wonder...and have the image of the horse forever ingrained too. My dad meant no harm...he was just in a hurry. I did sulk and cry for hours. But never forgot. Thanks again Kelleigh. SO good to hear from you. Susan

What a great story you tell Susan. It's one from childhood mixed and mingled with a few others. Wonder what ever happened to that old horse.

hi Pam! I don't know...but I did cry real quiet in the backseat for a hundred miles. And I've NEVER forgotten the image. I can shut my eyes and see him/her. This photo brought it ALL back. This is how it looked only not quite as late in the day. You could see the mirage and the horse there, not moving. SOOOooo sad. 49 years ago....Jeez. Don't know how I remember it. Thank you so, for this kind note my friend. Susan
