Wow. It's so interesting to know that these people were actually your ancestors. You do an amazing job of bringing the people and their efforts to life. You present them as bold, brave people who faced their journey with optimism and hope, making the loss of their children that much more painful. You hold the reader with you from the beginning, involving us in the characters and their story.

I love the old west and its rich, and usually poorly recorded history. I remember seeing a photo of Billy the Kid, and he did not look like any Hollywood actor I've ever seen. This a wonderfully evocative poem of that era, showing the hardships and not the Western film glamour. Thank you.

I have seen that photo as well and Billy the Kid was very homely. If you have time... read my poem Folk Songs. It is in my portfolio. The news was always romanticizing the stories and characters. LOL Thanks for the review. Nancy:)

This is a well written piece that pulled me in from the beginning. The descriptive words you chose created vivid imagery that placed me right in the middle of the story. The choice of background color works well.

'Once Upon A Time in Oregon ', is an extremely well-written and more than a little heart-breaking piece. It was a privilege to both read and review this talented poet's work. To me this is a six. I look forward to seeing your next post.

How tragic for your ancestor! And so glad he had more children so there would be YOU! The Oregon Trail is a must in the Portland school curriculum and there are several museums and interpretive center. Thank you for sharing this history!

Thank you for the thoughtful review and stars, Helen. They were not close relatives. I don't remember, but not direct ancestors. I don't even remember if they were maternal or paternal. LOL Nancy:)

Your poem is very well written, describing the tragedy that this family faced. I like to read stories about the pioneers. We do owe them a lot of thanks for the things they endured, and yet pressed on.

A well written story about a tragic incident and how families struggled in a flood to survive, a tragic story with well metered lines and end rhymes. How fascinating that the story was pieced together after that poor girls remains were found, love Dolly x

What a moving poem, detailing those sad events, in a very thoughtful, reflective and well-written way. It is a tribute to the stamina and perseverance of your ancestors. I also enjoyed the information in your Author's Notes. Well done.

One must admire people who suffered the hardships as this family. As you mentioned, there are so many unmarked graves pointing at the trails of our history. Good one, Nancy.

By now cities have been built over some of those graves. Sad isn't it. Thanks for the review and stars, Ben. Have a lovely day. Nancy:)

What a sad story from long ago. You did a great job, and I didn't find any errors. I'm sure there are lots of stories like that. I had a Great Great Uncle die when he tried to cross a flooded creek with a wagon and washed washed away. Thanks for sharing. Have a great evening. Shirley
