This is a most engaging article. I think I learn more about the recruitment practices of all four branches of our military than I ever did. You did a great job, but the ending was a bit of a let down with the gas pump bit. Nicely done!!

keimosobie,
Don't despair, it could have been a lot worse such as the Rangers, Green Berets, or Paratroops. Or the Seals if you had slipped up and joined the Navy. HeHe.

I liked the way you set this up by getting lost and meeting the army recruiter first, hearing the army recruiter's 'offer' and then asking the marine the same questions.
Petroleum supply specialist ... gotta laugh at that one. They trained him well just to pump gas. LOL
And you got a little dig in at the Marines. Join for the uniform.
Well written with fine dialogue. Entertaining.

Very detailed description and good flow with the dialogue, but most of all, the punch line."I had just joined the Army to pump gas." Absolutely wonderful, after all the training. He could have stayed home and done the same thing. I absolutely love it. Good job.

Bingo! you hit it. I am an ex-recruiter - Australian Army and we follow a similar pattern, except everyone does basic infantry training and then allocated - after carrying out a further battery of aptitude tests. During my time, the incentive to offer the college fund was a big program with the USA. Our State education programs do not allow that incentive. Our nearest is, a scholarship - last year of HS paid for by the Army for entrance to the Defence Academy in January of each year.
Specialists and re-ups were offered direct enlistment into the respective corps. SPAG: "The Army has some tricks of there own" - swap 'there' for 'their.' Good story. Happy memories from an ex-grunt.

Thanks for the correction. do you have to pay for H.S in Ausralia? It's free in the US.

HS is free but there are the other costs, textbboks, sport equipment etc, borne by the parent. College or Uni is paid for but most students opt for Higher Education Contribution Scheme. Some up-front payment and the rest paid back later when the student has graduated and in employment. As from Jan 1 - HECS-Help has been instituted, this means if stidents pasy up from $500 or more, thjere is a percentage (10 normally) reduction. Scholarships as per the US systems are not widely practised. IOW nol HS jock gets a free ride to college on sporting ability alone.
