You were always a poet, Nancy! Thanks for reviving this so we can enjoy your story poem. I was impressed with your trochaic meter. And yes, those cowboy dreams affected many. Even my husband went off to Montana after high school pursuing that but learned from that experience that he prefers working indoors and went to college where we met!

This was fabulous. Like a mini novel. I liked that you detailed the dismal part then compared it to the flashy and adventurous story that was sun in the fiction novels. Awesome poem, Nancy. Have a happy Easter. Gretchen

I have always enjoyed writing a story in a poem. I guess that's why I like sonnets. It's like writing a short story. LOL Have a lovely day, Gretchen. Nancy:)

I'm sure being a cowboy looking for an adventure would be very lonesome. Thank you for reposting this poem. I am so sorry I missed it the first time around. It is my loss. This is very good for a beginner.

The rhyme and rhythm is perfect, so it shows you were always a talented poet, Nancy.
Your story bounces along just as if I were sitting on a horse and trotting along. The rhythm is just like that. I'm sure many a lad went out wanting so much to be a cowboy, but as you say, the stories told are a long way off what it's truly like. I really enjoyed this one, my friend, I don't know how I missed it first time round. Well done, my talented friend. Love and hugs. Sandra xx

Thanks for the awesome review, Sandra. I have always liked telling a story in a poem. You know, a sonnet is like telling a short story. LOL We probably hadn't found each other yet. We were both Newbe's in 2012. Hugs. Nancy:)

I just checked, we joined only a couple of months apart. It's been a long time, hasn't it? Love you lots, and Happy Easter! xxxx

Mending fences and chasing cattle can be hard on anyone. They used to think the grass was greener on the other side of the fence till the found out different.like kids today in a hurry to leave home till the find out all responsibilities on them.

What young man hasn't dreamed of the cowboy's life? It sounds so romantic in song and stories, but it's entirely different in reality. I think you've pegged that reality very well.
Have you ever heard the old song, "When the Work's All Done This Fall"? This reminds me of it.

Well deserved. I stingy with my sixes. 8-)

So am I. Something has to really impress me before I put a six on it. Sixes are sacred. LOL xx N:)

This well-written, descriptive poem conveys a powerful message about how people--in this case cowboys--reminisce about the time they came to realize life is different from what they expected as youth, more hard work than they expected.

I almost want to grab a guitar and put this to music, only I don't have a guitar at the moment. You put the cowboy life into perspective. It is often romanticized, but it really it hard work, and lonely too for those who chose to live it.
I love the picture. It reminds me of a horse I had.
