I enjoyed reading your poem. You have portrayed the life of a ranch hand. Your descriptions are spot on. I do not see any room for improvement. Have a blessed day.

Good post. Yes, the of joy trail we ride can get lonesome and at times bring tears of joy. Nothing like witnessing the sunset or smelling the aroma of a good campfire. Good one, Nancy.

This poem, The Lonesome Cowboy, presented with five AABB-rhymed quatrains, captures the rigor over the romance of the cowhand and the tough job it is.

I enjoyed your poem of the lonesome cowboy. Your stanzas were well formed, and your lines flowed, beautifully. With your use of descriptive words and words related to how the main character was feeling, you gave a complete picture of this only cowboy and how different his life is, from what is shown through stories. Great writing! :))

Wow, Nancy! What a great job of creating a character. You really established the loneliness with images like the horse as his only companion, and "beans and coffee by the campfire."
Your poem reads with a bouncy, sing-song quality that works very well for it. (I can hear this as lyrics sung around a campfire.)
Your rhymes are excellent, as always, but especially in the pairings that are less expected, like "cattle"/"astraddle," "campfire"/"barbwire" and "dreaming"/"demeaning." You start out brilliantly with your first rhyme, "companion" and "canyon."
This is a very enjoyable poem!

I am delighted with your praise of my poem Michele. That poem came to me so easily. That used to happen often now I can't seem to think of anything to write about. I suppose it is because I am not out and about at all and I have a dull life. You made my day with the kind words. Thank you. Nancy:)

It's my pleasure, Nancy. Actually, I've enjoyed your recent works too, and have been very glad, and relieved, to see new work, as I know your vision issues were making that difficult for a while.
As far as dull life, there's a reason I very rarely enter true story contests. I hate when I can hear my readers snore!

Yes, cowboys life isn't an easy one, alone, cold, hot, and worn to a frazzle from sunup to sun down. But oh how I miss those days on the farm from time to time, wishing I wasn't too broke down to do it all again. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

I understand. I still have the Ranch but can't afford the animals since my husband passed away. It was a good life too. I have NO life now but I have memories. Thank you Ric. Nancy:)

That's a fine poem, and it was interesting and vividly expressed, making it easy to imagine not only the scene but also his feelings.
Well done. I like it. Good choice of image too.

You've written a poem that counters the glory mentioned in those early novels of cowboys living the adventurous life. As you pointed out, it was also a lonely and difficult existence. Thanks for sharing this early poem with steady rhythm and interesting rhymes. Have a blessed Easter. Carol

I'm so glad you posted this and for the notes dear Nancy, you were good from the outset of your writing career, being a cowboy was probably as you describe it here, and not the romantic notion as in the movies and fictionalised books, beautifully written dear girl, blessings Roy

This is great. I really enjoyed the gentle lilt of the rhythm which seemed to reflect the movement of the horse, the long, rather monotonous days of this lonesome cowboy dreaming now only of a return home to some kind of purpose. Flawless meter and rhyme. Thanks for sharing, Debbie
