Paragraph 9: Dr... should be plural ?spelling
Paragraph 14:... Dr Williams said, ["]
This is a lovely chapter with toutches of delicacy and romance. The tension is still building but we are kept in touch with the human side of the characters. Giddy

This is another very good post, but you have switched POV a few times.
"Grandmother, Dark was talking about Murder. (lower case 'm' on murder)
I quickly apologized. "I'm sorry. My timing sucks. Just ignore what I just said." (comma after aplogized)
Rachael immediately responded. "No apology necessary. (comma after responded)

How lovely that James can think of something
other than the horror and devastating carried
out by his father... a girl has turned his
head...
and promise [to] never do it again(,) to receive God's forgiveness
Most enjoyable, Sasha.

Yes, I thought poor James needed a distraction.

Yes, Alfina's well-reasoned question was impressive and I liked Angela's giving her seal of approval to the budding romance. Cheers- Joan

Alfina seems to be an intelligent woman despite her lack of experience. She asks very intelligent questions. When she doesn't understand something, she asks questions until she is satisfied with the answer. James seems to be smitten with Rachael.

Grandmother is much smarter than most think. Yes, James is definitely smitten with Rachael.

'The Meaning of Forgiveness' is a chapter full of Alfina's reactions to the death penalty and her surgery --presented with good dialogue.
May want to reword this with a little broken-English: "Do all those fancy words mean I can go for walks with Angela and my grandchildren after the surgery?"
typo: "You will have to be very careful not to injure you(r) foot again
A coffee date with Racheal is a good addition, Sasha.

Thanks for catching the spag and the suggestion. I will go back over that sentence and see what I can do with it.

Sounds like Alfina has a much higher degree of intelligence than any of them thought. She has so much to learn and seems to be grasping it pretty well. It's good that Rachael agreed to have coffee with James. A lot of women would be afraid he had his father's bad genes.

I thought it would be nice for James to have a love interest.

Perhaps it is just me, but I felt there was too much going on in this chapter. I thought the inclusion of the orthopedic doctor to be out-of-place, with more focus or attention given to the deposition. Otherwise, well done. Linda

Thanks. Yes, there was a lot going on but sometimes that's how life actually is.

Hi Smurphy
A fantastically interesting chapter.
That Alfina woman certainly brought up a few disturbing issues.
I thing most religious people get round the many confusions and enigmas in theology by declaring - that the ways of the Lord are mysterious.
A great read.

Hi Valerie:}
Another short, but important chapter.
You reveal Alfina to have an intellect far greater than expected, when she says, "You tell me God is good. You say He forgive all sins. If God forgive all sins, then why does man need to punish the sinner?" {A question that always challenges me, when men apply the death penalty for punishment or solders kill each other in wars without being considered guilty of a crime. Perhaps Angela's answer to Alfina is as good as man can provide:
Angela smiled. "A person must be repentant or sorry for what they have done and promise to never do it again to receive God's forgiveness. Man's law and God's law are similar. Man can forgive and God can forgive, but God's forgiveness determines if you go to heaven or hell.
Dr. Gunzel,s entrance seems a bit ill-timed, but perhaps his news that surgery can repair Angela's ankle and foot injuries to the point where she can walk normally, offsets her sadness over the need to testify against her son.
I love James interaction with Rachael in the following actions and dialog:
Without warning, Rachael tapped me on the shoulder. She leaned close and whispered into my ear, "Don't worry, James, Tom has taken hundreds of depositions, and he is always gentle. He knows what he's doing."
The smell of Rachael's perfume distracted me. Without thinking, I blurted out, "Would you like to have a cup of coffee with me sometime?"
As soon as the words escaped my mouth, I quickly apologized. "I'm sorry. My timing sucks. Just ignore what I just said."
Rachael immediately responded. "No apology necessary. Yes, I would love to have a cup of coffee with you. Just tell me where and when." {James' one weakness is his lack of refinement in social interactions, a result of his isolation as a bookworm.
Perhaps life has finally taken a good turn for James. Rachael seems like a real sweetheart.
Now I am ready for the deposition.
Love and Irish Hugs for another six-star chapter.

I've given several depositions. They are usually quite boring and very, very long. Glad you liked this chapter. I'm working on the next chapter right now.
