What a wonderful heart warming story. you built the suspense and disappointment well. loved how you ended with the boy in the story hugging his jacket it warms my heart to know that somewhere people are still warm and loving and recognize the hard work and dedication of those who have struggled just to be. thank you for sharing.

Thanks, Rob, for your warm review. I'm so glad this story had a happy ending.

This story gave me goosebumps. Such a heartfelt story going through the emotions of a mother's hope and love for a child. And Bobby was so mature, wanting to be rewarded, but accepting if he wasn't. I do have a couple of suggestions, but I am giving you a six-star rating because that is what this story deserves.
do you want question marks here? Do you know! Do you see!
this should be in past tense (made) to be consistent with the rest of the story: Barbara's bitterness toward John make

Thank you so much for the six. And also for catching the tense error. I think both explanation points and question marks would work, but I changed to question marks to see how it worked.

Well,, thank you so very much for sharing this very heart-felt story. What a joy he must have been for his mother. I am pleased that the coach and his team mates were able to recognize his strength and character. Great job. Zee

This is a beautiful story and I am happy that your nephew has the lifelong memory of touching so many others and that he was rewarded such a high honor. I am sure it is one of his most favorite memories of a life filled with pain and rejection. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for the exceptional rating. Even today, my nephew has a positive caring attitude and many friends who go with him to sports games in the Tampa, Florida area where he has lived for the past twenty years.

OMG This was a fantastic story. I was so happy that he got the jacket in the end. He really deserved that after working so hard with his handicap. Great job of telling the story!

Thanks, Linda. I can only imagine my sister's agony when she thought he would be passed by.

This is such a touching non-fiction story about your nephew, who I can tell through your writing you admire very much. He seems to have a pure heart and accepts his handicap with dignity and graciousness--look at how he acted through the ceremony when he did not think he was going to get any prize: he wholeheartedly cheered for his friends and didn't show one once of spite or bitterness. He sounds like a remarkable person to come into your life. Thank you for sharing this well-written piece.

I too was touched that he told his mom not to mind. It didn't matter, and that he cheered for his classmates. He has accepted his disability and grace and shows no bitterness. In fact, he has quite a sense of humor.

That is wonderful and inspiring to hear. I love reading stories like this one because they remind me how resilient the human spirit is in the face of challenges.

I'm so happy you posted this today Sherry as I was completely out of sixes and even a six does nothing for this but that is all I have besides helping you promote which I will be doing as this was such a touching read.. One that had the tears flowing this morning.. I hate that your sister has passed away but I'm happy you are there for Bobby to help him with his needs... The strength that is shown in this read is just amazing, how he isn't bitter and cheers all the others on, while waiting to see if he too will get recognized and the fact that he did shows people still have good in them, as he truly was so very deserving of such..With his ills he still pushed forward..Thank you for sharing sweetie and best of luck in the contest.. You can count on my vote and I will be promoting this throughout the day..

Thanks for the kind words, Tammy, and for the extra special rating. With his mother gone, his father has made more effort to visit and stay for ten days at a time. They get along beautifully now, and he would Bobby to move to Maryland and stay with him and his wife. But Bobby hates cold weather and has a lot of friends in Tampa who go with him to sports games and help him shop. The irony: his mother remarried ten years ago and moved to Missouri, but was planning on leaving her husband six months of the year after she retired (in two years) and stay with her son.

This is a great story with an even greater ending. Sometimes life gives you lemons. This boy made lemonade and touched others lives in very positive ways. This was a very emotional story line that made this reader cry. I thoroughly enjoyed reading every word of it. This was just an outstanding story line that deserves all of these six stars awarded here... John

I just read it to my husband and he teared up too. THanks for the exceptional rating. Bobby, who now prefers to be called Robert never complains about his condition. He has many friends and a job too. He and his father are close again also.
