An excellent account of your encounter with squirrels. I admire the way you tried so many innovations to get rid of them. I also found an interesting fact; in your country squirrels live more in cities than the country side. Some squirrels!
A great job of dealing with squirrels and writing about them.

Hi Beth! I shot a squirrel once. Thinking it was in my newly sprouted bean plants...and have not pointed a gun at any living thing since. It's okay tho to run the crows away with noise I guess. I love squirrels...but they can be a pesty! But crows are worse! Lol! This is such a well written piece. AND we once took a poor old tomcat down the road to a park...we didn't have the money to neuter and keep him. Little things like that eat at me too. I hope he is okay. IF only people would neuter and spay more. SO frustrating...but I hope you will put some photos in FA or use them here? Can't wait to see your pix!! LOVE< Susan

People in the country used to think nothing of taking cats or dogs off and leaving them or even killing them. I don't even like to think about that. Thank you so much for the review. I do use my pictures sometimes. If you're interested you might can get into my portofolio with this http://365project.org/vernabeth/365/2012-03-09

"the good old days". (days.")

The shot didn't quite kill it, and I wouldn't let him finish the job. I cried all the way home with the limp animal cradled in the tail of my shirt. It didn't live, but I think I managed to cure my husband of any enjoyment he'd ever derived from squirrel hunting. (This happened to my husband - he shot out of reflex - but he was the one who couldn't bear it. His brother-in-law had to kill the squirrel for him. He never hunted again.)

he was no longer a part of (the) great outdoors

(I had a squirrel that came to our window to get nuts every day (for several years). He eventually came in but only enough to get out of the cold. Alas, one of our cats killed it last fall.)

off at the roots and leaveing (leaving) them to die.

. I'm going out and (change 'and' to 'to') buy some traps."

At one time we had about fifteen squirrels that came to eat on our 3/4 acre lot. We buy 50# bags of cracked corn & my husband built them squirrel houses - one named McDonalds & one Burger King. Now there are only about five or six squirrels left because the cat population increased with all the feedings we do. We also feed a woodchuck when he's not hibernating.

I enjoyed your squirrel story very much.

Patricia

They really are cute, but they can be a nuisance. My daughter had them in her yard and one stole all the dog food and stashed it in a birdhouse he'd taken over.

Thank you so much for the review and the comments. I had one take over a bird house too. I've also learned the gray squirrels will eat bird eggs and also baby birds.

I've always lived surrounded by squirrels and have always loved them - what a poignant scene of your cradling the wounded squirrel
Oh, feeding the squirrels to the owls, how grotesque
Since, we'd moved to a home - drop the comma
I love the story of freeing the squirrel :-)
Everyday we trap more - Every day - as one word everyday is an adjective, like in everyday clothes
A most entertaining essay :-) Brooke

Hi Beth, I enjoyed your account very much. Such lovely flowing writing and clear imaging makes it an easy read. There are a few teeny typos: "a whole cake of suet in afternoon" a word missing; " WE'RE can't grow anything" shd be WE; " I'm going out an buy some traps" ? ?; " so what different will one more make" shd be difference; "without risking loosing" shd be losing; " spent the close to an hour" ? " the road through the
p ark" space in park. Sincerely, Peridot

Lol. This story is pretty funny. I saved a squirrel once and had some of the same problems that you did. They are cute little buggers, aren't they?

I'm not going to comment on spag because I don't have a solid enough base to provide any advice in that area. However, I did notice in that three or four paragraphs some typos and wrong word usage. You may want to have a read over and see if you can fix them. (i.e. what different (difference) could it make). I saw a few like that.

Anyways, great story. For me it moved at a nice pace and told an interesting story. Glad to hear you're not shooting them! Haha.

Interesting. Very interesting. Sounds like a lot of squirrels for one area. They are so cute, but my sister had been feeding one on the fire escape landing outside her kitchen window. It made its way in one day while she was at work and my niece and nephew at school. It pretty much tore apart the apartment and they had a very hard time getting it out that evening. Your story is well written, thought provoking and honest. Very enjoyable and educational also.

Sorry, that was my sister in law!!! She still feeds the little guy, but no longer leaves the window open now that he can get past the screen.

I enjoyed reading your essay. I perfer dogs and cats too, but I do put out feeders for the squirrels so I can enjoy watching them. They are comical little creatures.

Thanks so much for the review Barbara. They are cute but so annoying. I'll just watch the birds and enjoy my two dogs.
