This is a lovely piece that tells so much. I did not hear about the "Trail of Tears" until I decided to take an American History course in my 30's. It was never taught when I attended high school. How sad for my generation that does not know about the indignities imposed upon the Indian Nation. Great job!

Fluffyhead, thank you so very much. I must go into your portfolio. This is the third or fourth time you have reviewed me. I am so very very thankful. I have a little Indian blood in me, Sioux and Cherokee, but not much. Again thank you so much. I am passionate about the history of our Native Americans... jlsavell

This, my friend, is a beautiful poem that speaks for itself. The poem is filled with great imagery and great respect for the Cherokee. Being raised in Oklahoma, I was raised learning about this sad time in Oklahoma history. Not only did it happen to the Cherokees but also the Creeks which are from Georgia as well. Best of luck to you in the contest. Thank you for sharing and educating, Shirley

Jimi, I'm glad that you have undertaken to relay such an important part of American history through this exceptional poem. I have read Chief Speckled Snake's speech at http://dbpedia.org/page/Speckled_Snake. Your poem is consistent with the spirit of his words. The sardonic nature of his speech was not lost on me. I doubt if the Educational system fully covers what was done to these first Americans. Best wishes in the contest. Blessings, Hector

Hector, now this is such a pleasant surprise. Thnk you ever so much. I have read over 100 hundred of them from different tribes and each one is moving, eloquent, heart wrenching, and vivid. I hope to attempt to do more. The history of these peole I am passionate about, have been since I read Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee in my younger years. I do not want them to be forgotten any more than those lost in the Holocaust and Survivors and of our slave era. I will one day do one for Sojourn Truth. If you are not familair with her, she was a slave, but became free through her tenacity and strong will. Her story is moving.. please look her up.. again thank you ever ever so much my friend.. I am humbled.. jimi

Your very welcome, Jimi. Yes, I'm familiar with Sojourner Truth--She was both highly religious and socially conscious--her spirit was always free. Blessings, Hector
Comment from Eleanor Buron
One of the saddest times in history. The Red man suffered, lives were lost; but the worst was the trampling of their spirit; we took their land and irreparably injured their spirit. I think your poem captures this well and I love the repetition of "He loves his red children" Well done and quite emotional.

Eleanor, thank you so, very, very much. I truly am at a loss for words. Your loyal support means a great deal and I cannot express enough gratitude, except to say thank you. I will be attempting to write many of these. I have read over 100 to date and each one is moving, eloquent, heart-wrenching and dignified, Again thank you... jimi

Thought I'd pop by as you told Cat I'd never reviewed you. I'm sure I have as I rocognise your pretty profile pic.
Anyway, being a lazy so n so, I'm not usually one for long notes...or poems, but I'll forgive you here as the notes are very informative and the poem has a briilliantly unique tone, of the Indian relating - with respect OR sarcasm - the 'wise' words of the white man who it's implied is a wondrously intelligent and supportive creature - "F*ck off you pesky redskins or we'll blow your heads off"
Extremely well written as a rhyming story/poem and had me rivited all the way through.
Oh, the meter's off, LOL!
Best wishes, earl x

Earl, now what am I to do. Yes, lol,,,, I am meter challenged!!! but it appears I am not the only one on this site that has a learning difference. That being said, thank you ever so much for stopping by to read and review my work. If I am mistaken about your reviewing me, I do apologize. Did not mean to sound unappreciative. After all, it is nice to have been remembered for reviewing one. I have been on the site since 2008 and sometimes I disappear for months at a time. Once again I thank you. Oh, you do not like long poetry? Is there a reason why? I ask, because some of the best legendary poets have written lenghthy poems of epic proportion. That is all. I hope to do many of these works base on the Native American Indian speeches. If you have not read any of them, I highly recommend it. They are moving, heart wrenching, and dignified. again thank you ever so much... jlsavell

Noprobs, jlsavell - I was just playing about your meter, as I'm sure you realise.
I'm ashamed to say I've never read much at all - about 10 novels in my whole life, and just ONE published poem - 'The Highwayman' by Alfred Noyes, which my daughter showed me and it inspired me to try my hand at poetry.
I write lots of sonnets, but have never read a word of Shakespeare...it probably shows, LOL

Oh my..I will have to read your sonnets. Now I, sir, would never attempt a sonnet, not ever!!! I just write and write and write.. about all kinds of things, but to have to adhere to a strict form totally stifles me. I appreciate and envy those who do it as easily as breathing..
-
I'd be honoured if you did - I think one's still a payer, but I'm not sure. No need to review.
-
If I read I review. I care not whether it pays or not. I love poetry, good poetry and good stories. If they move me in any way, they have paid me a lot. I am not here to climb the ladder of stars. I am here to read, to glean and to help and to praise those who also love the written word. You will find that out about me.

jlsavell--Out of all the atrocities man has committed
against his fellow man, the inhumane treatment done to
the First Americans are arguably the worst. This nar-
rative speaks to the culmination of so many treaties,
promises and pacts made with this group only to be
broken (not one treaty/promise ever kept!). It wasn't
enough that the eradication of the buffalo technically decimated this proud people, the United States govern-
ment via the 'Trail of Tears' lowered their numbers
even more. A bold and tactful write by scribe of the humiliations and horrifics visited on Native Americans.
Good luck in the contest. teafor2

A great poem dear one. I lived for many years with the back of my property line being part of the trail of tears near it's beginning in the mountains of East Tennessee. Horrible their fate in the middle of winter. Thank you for bringing back to our attention the travesty that was placed on the Cherokee.
