THANK YOU. I forgot this one. I wrote it several months after the passing of my wife. It was an easy story to do, especially when most of it is true. thanks again.

A story that I'm sure many have experienced. I like the way you described each scene according to the emotions your character was going through. Each word rang true. Beautifully handled!

Aw, that was a lovely story, so well told. It brought goosebumps to my arms, it was so nice. If those friends hadn't been true friends, they wouldn't have taken all that time to help their friend back into the fold. That is what love is about, caring and having faith. Losing someone you love does make you wonder if God truly exists, but He shows you in other ways that He does care. This was a pleasure to read. :)) Sandra xx

A good story of rebirth.

Paragraph 11 would fit more neatly after paragraph 4.

Paragraph 7 should say "creaked open."

"Tell him not to care. His boss didn't." (Note the use of periods instead of commas.)

...Pope reigning (note spelling with a g) over a bar mitzvah. (I don't quite understand this simile.)

I like the ending, as the friends' persistence finally brings the narrator back to life.

    QUESTION
How many popes did you ever see conduct a bar mitzvah?

I'm so glad the friends did what they did. Only true friends would go to that much trouble. Your story is well-written, interesting start to finish. I do hope your character's friend's intervention goes far.

You really captured this feeling of loneliness we have when we lose a significant other, and as you keep injecting all these little moments with Emily, scene after scene, we feel the pain of the loss. We get the struggle of the friends trying to help here too. They are persistent, and in the end, they drag you out of your shell. Also the loss of faith, when things don't go our way. The disappointment is apparent as you describe these scenes of lighting candles in a prayer vigil, promising to do anything to save your wife. And the answer is not what we want. It really is a real life kind of story, told from this personal point of view, in very personal terms. estory

The tears in my eyes tell me you struck a nerve. lol. I've been trying to figure this God thing out, trying to let Him in a little more, trying not to be so stubborn, trying to make friends even though I have walls 100 feet tall and 25 feet thick. It's a hard battle to fight and try to win. I'm glad this person had amazing friends, I have a couple of those as well, they can be real life savers.

this must have been difficult to write--in places the narrator's pain is palpable. The situation is very realistic.

A thought --there is at times stilted/unusual language that distracts from the narrator's conversational tone such as the comparison of blood boiling and meat sizzling on the grill or "I opposed his suggestions initially." It makes it seem less of a natural conversation.

This really moved me.
I could feel the grief so strongly and deep.
Often, when we're losing a loved one, we wander what God does...
God's actions and our expectations often do not match...

This text reflects how strange it often is: we can be so lost in our grief and our friends are in a different world...

I'm glad that all three friends went to the music...

This story is so full of emotion that it brought me to tears. I love the slow transition of isolated futility to hope. The characters are very real and although the ending is perfect, it makes me wish this was a chapter of a book, because I want to read more. Excellent job!!
