Yes and while the descriptives are excellent and the emotions build in terror, this could also be a psychological thriller whereby thise footsteps that chase you down the road are really reincarnates of your past.

Just in time you reach home. The light, the beacon and the welcome by the dog saved you tonight.

But, what about tomorrow, when once again you venture into the dark abyss? Will the demons of your momories catch you?

HI Ingrid! Thank you so much. And you are so right! SEE????? YOU are so brilliant, you see things that the writers THEMSELVES don't even see! I am humbled and ashamed too! God, thank you so for this eye-opening note my friend! HUG! Susan

Your descriptive detail of setting creates mood well. Your wording is quite poetic, too :-)
You create strong visuals with lines like limbs resembling sinewy arms with claws.
You also express the narrator's fears effectively.
Your ending had me going there for a minute as those gnashing teeth reached for the car - I felt such relief in the final paragraph :-) Brooke

Hi Brooke! Thank you! What a great review! I love creating a sense of dread like that. It's the easiest emotion to convey for me. I don't know why. But, thank you so much for this enthusiastic review! ") Susan

this is very well written, susan, i really enjoyed reading this, reminds me when i was driving my little volkswagon beetle. i went to cocoa beach florida and wanted to find a church to go to, i got lost and ended up on a cow pasture road that went on for 37 miles. i refused to turn around because i wasn't giving up on church. i ended up in st. cloud and went to church and had a nice lunch. the next day when i left universal studios, i was cut off and couldn't get onto the beeline expressway. nobody could tell me how to get back to the beeline, it was 2 o'clock in the morning and i was driving around aimlessly, but God had a plan. I ended up in St. Cloud and i knew my way back to the hotel. but i was scared to death driving that 37 miles of cow pasture road, afraid i would break down in the middle of that dark expanse of notthingness

You certainly kept me hanging in there, waiting to see what would become of you on theat treacherous road. I used to live in the boonies too and it can be frightening in the dark, especially in stormy weather LOL. Fun read.

My land is out in the boonies also, I know what you mean by the hills have eyes. In my area it is cyotes or deer or moose. This is a good read, good luck on the contest.

OH moose! Wow! We have elk here, but in Indiana, they are penned like cattle...and these nitwits here THINK they are hunters when they shoot them after they have been handed hay and grain all winter by people! They don't know to run...and if they do, they are fenced in! Oh, sorry for this rant...mentioning moose got me started! Thank you so much, I am really glad you liked my little tale. I always appreciate hearing from you! What is your name? If I can ask? Thanks!! susan

Susan,

This is a sinister view of nature and an excellent short story. I enjoyed reading this post and couldn't find anything to criticize.

this is a quirky little ofering that is light hearted in its attempt to paint a picture of hidden menaces as the writer drives home through the desolate road that cuts through the hills, I for one enjoyed it
